Students Earn National Amazon Scholarships

Seven seniors representing five high schools are embarking on careers in STEM with the help of $40,0000 Amazon Future Engineer college scholarships and paid internships! The students, who will pursue careers in computer science and engineering, include:Michael Kalkidan, Academy of Health Sciences; Oluwademilade Toluwani, Charles H. Flowers High School; Jayson Kiggundu and Mouhamadou Dieng, DuVal High School; Yeabkal Abeje and Gabrielle Stewart, Eleanor Roosevelt High School; and Nhandi Nyawela, CMIT South.

Maryann Nwude was selected as a recipient of the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship! The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship awarded 250 college-bound seniors from underserved and underrepresented communities with a $40,000 scholarship and a guaranteed paid Software Engineering internship at Amazon after their freshman year. Maryann also received the NCWIT (National Center for Women & Information Technology) Award for Aspirations in Computing as a Maryland Affiliate Winner. This award honors 9th-12th grade women, genderqueer, or non-binary students for their computing-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Charles H. Flowers High School to Offer Computer Science Courses with Amazon Future Engineer 

Amazon Future Engineer is a four-part, childhood-to-career program that works to inspire and educate 10 million children and young adults each year to pursue careers in the fast-growing field of computer science and coding – Amazon Future Engineer focuses on access for all.

Springdale, MD, Feb. 21, 2019 – Charles H. Flowers High School is now part of the Amazon Future Engineer program and will receive funding from Amazon to start offering computer science classes to students this Fall. Charles H. Flowers High School is one of more than 1,000 high schools across the country currently signed up for Amazon Future Engineer, a national program aimed at making computer science accessible to all students. With more than 1,000 high schools signed up, Amazon Future Engineer will serve tens of thousands of high school students. 

With Amazon Future Engineer’s funding, Charles H. Flowers High School will offer Intro to Computer Science and Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science classes through curriculum provider, Edhesive. Amazon’s funding provides preparatory lessons, tutorials, and professional development for teachers, fully sequenced and paced digital curriculum for students, and live online support every day of the week for both teachers and students. These full-year courses are designed to inspire, prepare, and propel students in their pursuit of computer science education. All students participating in this program will receive a free membership to AWS Educate which provides them with free access to computing power in the AWS Cloud for their coding projects and content to learn about cloud computing.
