E.S.O.L. stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. At Bowie High School, Limited English Proficient (LEP) students take daily English Language courses via sheltered ESOL instruction or collaborative instructional model following the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model.

Language acquisition skills which include but not limited to the following areas: explicit & intensive academic vocabulary instruction, phonics and phonemic awareness for Newcomers and Beginners, intensive and contextual grammar across all levels, general reading processing skills (fluency and comprehension), and developmental writing, are taught by highly qualified ESOL teacher/para professional practitioners.

The ESOL Department also offers the following content-based courses: Applications in Algebra (AiA), Language of Science (LOS), and Language of History (LOH). Optional course called English Language Lab for ELs in the mainstream RELA classes may also be offered.

ESOL students who possess higher English proficiency skills (i.e. Bridging or Reaching levels) are enrolled in mainstream subject/content areas using co-teaching model between the general education teacher and the ESOL teacher. However, they are still tested via WIDA ACCESS to measure their English Language proficiency.

An annual examination that measures the English language growth of our ESOL students is administered. It is called the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0. It covers subtests in Listening and Reading, Speaking, and Writing across all grade levels. Under the new ESSA Law, an ESOL student is expected to meet his/her Growth-to-Target outcomes starting from Year 2 after his/her Initial Baseline Year (first year of WIDA Testing). An ESOL student may exit the program by getting an overall score of 4.5 or up. Once exited, an ESOL student becomes a Reclassified English Language Learner (RELL) whose language skills need to be monitored in the general education courses for the next two (2) years.
