Principal's Message
Greetings Apple Grove Friends and Families!
"And how are the children?
As we pause to observe Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, selflessness, and commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy today will never be forgotten.
This holiday also reminds us to cherish time with family, reflect with gratitude, and care for one another with compassion and unity. As we enter the final weeks of the school year, let us continue working together to ensure every student feels safe, feels seen, and is supported to be successful.
We hope your family enjoys a peaceful and restorative Memorial Day filled with love, reflection, and joy. Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the Greatness at the Grove.
We only have three more weeks together! Please review our May Family Calendar (https://canva.link/7xxw7ant2d3rptg) to stay informed about important dates, events, and celebrations happening throughout the month of May. We are also sharing the Action for Happiness Calendar (actionforhappiness.org), which offers simple daily ideas to promote kindness, gratitude, and well-being at home. We encourage families to participate together and make May a joyful and meaningful month for our students.
Please also note the Quarter 4 Progress Report grades are available for you to view in your Synergy ParentVue account online.
We warmly invite you to step into The Grove experience!
Come enjoy a lesson, lunch, or morning meeting with your child. Seeing you right next to your child makes a huge difference in their day!

Childhood vision disorders are becoming more prevalent, and hearing loss is one of the most common developmental disorders identifiable at birth.
Prince George’s County Public Schools are required to provide vision and hearing screenings for students entering specified grades unless the student has been screened within the past year. These screenings involve quick, simple, evidence-based procedures used to identify students who may have potential vision or hearing concerns.
If your child does not pass a screening, you will be notified. Please contact your child’s pediatrician as soon as possible, or schedule an appointment over the summer, to have the screening results verified.
If you wish to opt your child out of this mandated screening, please email me, Nurse Wray, at [kristi.johnsonwray@pgcps.org] and simply state your request.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email.
I will be conducting these screenings with in the next 2 weeks.

April showers have brought May flowers! We have 20 school days. That means students should be in school at least 19 days this month to stay on track with our attendance goal (94%). Every day counts toward learning, growth, and success!
We love having your child at school! Their curiosity and joy bring life to our school community and are what makes the "Greatness" at the Grove! Being at school every day helps children stay connected, confident, and on track in their learning.
At Apple Grove Elementary, we believe that consistent school attendance is essential to student success! Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically on grade level and beyond, build strong relationships with peers and teachers, and develop lifelong habits for success.
To support this goal, we are asking families to commit to ensuring their child attends school at least 94% of instructional days, which means no more than 11 missed days for the entire school year—or about one day per month.
Spring weather often brings increased pollen and seasonal allergies, which can make students feel uncomfortable with symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. While these symptoms can be bothersome, regular school attendance remains important for maintaining learning routines and staying on track academically. Families can help by monitoring symptoms, following medical guidance, and sending students to school when they are well enough to participate. Consistent attendance ensures students do not miss valuable instruction, even during allergy season.
Here are some ways to help keep your child healthy and in school this spring:
Create backup plans for getting to school. If you are unable to bring your child, consider arranging a ride with another family or forming a “walking school bus” with neighbors.
Seek guidance when your child is ill. If you are unsure whether to keep your child home or send them to school, consult your child’s medical provider or our school nurse, Mrs. Wray (Kristi.JohnsonWray@pgcps.org).
Watch for signs of stress or anxiety. If stress or anxiety may be affecting attendance, reach out to your child’s teacher, the school nurse, school counselor, or medical provider for support.
Promote healthy habits. Encourage frequent handwashing, adequate sleep, nutritious meals, daily exercise, and plenty of fluids, vitamins and allergy medicines.
Help prevent the spread of germs. Remind children not to share cups, utensils, or personal items.
Dress for changing spring weather. Please ensure your child comes to school prepared with layers such as a light jacket or sweater, as mornings can be cool and afternoons warmer. If your family needs assistance with spring clothing, please contact Ms. Carter (Laniece.Carter@pgcps.org).
Stay connected if your child must be home. If illness keeps your child out for more than a day or two, reach out to your child’s teacher to request learning materials so they can stay on track.
We know springtime or seasonal allergies can be challenging, but showing up matters! If you are experiencing difficulty getting your child to school or need additional support or resources, please call us at 301-449-4966 and ask to speak with Mrs. Branch (Keisha.SmithBranch@pgcps.org).
We are here to partner with you and support your child’s success.
Thank you for your continued partnership—we look forward to seeing your child each day!

Did you know that 30% to 40% of all words in English have a related word in Spanish. With similar sound, appearance, and meaning, these cognates help students transfer that word knowledge into their second language. Here is a list of English Spanish cognates
How can I support my child's education if I don't speak English?
We are excited to share a new tool to support our English Language Learners and their families — the English Language Development (ELD) Family Resource Website (https://sites.google.com/pgcps.org/resourcesforesolfamiles/home). This website is designed to give parents and guardians quick access to helpful resources, tips, and information to support your child’s growth in English at home and at school. You’ll find activities, guides, and connections to school programs that make learning engaging and accessible.
Together, we can ensure that every child is safe, seen, supported, and successful!
At Apple Grove Elementary, we remain committed to ensuring our youngest learners receive a high-quality, nurturing, and engaging early childhood experience. As part of our ongoing Pre-Kindergarten Accreditation process, we are excited to share several important updates that reflect our dedication to continuous improvement and strong family partnership.
At the start of the school year, our team conducted a comprehensive self-appraisal to reflect on our program’s strengths and identify areas for growth. Using this reflection, we collaborated with the Office of Accreditation and Licensing to develop a targeted Program Improvement Plan for the 2025–2026 school year, ensuring that all areas of our program meet and exceed expectations.
In October, our Pre-K classrooms also participated in a CLASS observation, which measures the quality of teacher-student interactions. The results highlighted many “glows” in our learning environment, along with specific “grows” that are guiding our professional learning and instructional practices.
We also value the voices of our families. Pre-K parents completed a survey to share their experiences with registration and school processes. Their feedback is helping us strengthen communication, streamline systems, and better support families throughout their journey at Apple Grove.
Together, these efforts reflect our commitment to excellence, continuous growth, and ensuring that every child and family feels safe, seen, and supported from the very beginning.
Please take a moment to read the following attachments-
Over the next couple of months, students will participate in several important assessments that help us understand their progress and plan instruction to best support their learning. Our students in the English Language Development (ELD) program will take the ACCESS assessment and ELD Writing Task to gauge their English proficiency. Kindergarteners through third grade will take the DIBELS assessment to gauge how well they read. First grade through fifth graders will take the second Benchmark assessments in reading, math and fifth grade science to gauge how well they learned grade level skills and standards. Additionally, third, fourth, and fifth graders will take the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) tests in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science.
We encourage you to click on the informational guides linked below to learn more about each assessment, what your child can expect, and how you can help them feel confident and prepared.
Your partnership matters. Reviewing this information, encouraging consistent attendance, and helping your child get plenty of rest and reassurance will go a long way in helping them do their very best.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to ensure every student feels safe, seen, supported, and successful.
At Apple Grove Elementary School, the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff are our highest priorities. We understand the concerns some families may have about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) visiting school campuses. Please know that we remain vigilant and have clear procedures in place to protect the rights and safety of all students and families—regardless of immigration status.
If you currently have an active immigration court notice and need legal consultation, please call Apple Grove Elementary at (301) 449-4966 and ask for Mrs. Akpeneye or Ms. Carter.
What you should know:
✅ Schools are protected spaces. Under federal guidance, schools are considered protected locations, and ICE should not conduct enforcement actions at schools or bus stops except under extraordinary circumstances.
✅ No unauthorized access. ICE agents/officers will not be allowed inside Apple Grove ES. Staff will use our video telecom system to verify credentials and the reason for the visit while keeping doors securely locked.
✅ No release of information. Under FERPA, we cannot share student or family information without parental consent or a valid judicial warrant. Administrative ICE warrants do not permit access to student records.
✅ Legal and security response. If ICE visits, we will immediately contact the Office of General Counsel and the Security Office to notify them.
✅ Family notifications. If a situation involves your child, we will notify you immediately and provide updates in your preferred language. Please make sure your child’s Emergency Contacts are updated in Synergy and on your child's Emergency Contact Form.
In the rare event of an ICE visit, we will take additional safety steps including reverse evacuation or lockdown procedures (no one enters or exits the building).
We will also provide helpful resources such as Red Cards and preparedness guides in the lobby and main office.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at (301) 449-4966 or reach Principal Broussard at Samecia.Broussard@pgcps.org
We are here to support you and ensure Apple Grove remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
