Honolulu, HI | Originally constructed by the Territorial Hotel Co. as part of an initiative to promote luxury travel to Hawaii, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Waialae Golf Course came into existence. On February 1, 1927, the golf course, designed by the world-famous golf architect Seth Raynor and his associate Charles Banks welcomed its first golfers. In 1930, a group of notable Waialae Golf Course players established a private club named Waialae Country Club. Since 1928, Waialae has been the venue for Hawaii's Open tournaments, with the inaugural PGA TOUR Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament taking place in 1965. Presently, Waialae Country Club hosts the PGA TOUR's Sony Open in Hawaii and boasts 59 years of PGA TOUR competition, making it the third longest-running host course on the PGA TOUR.
Over the years, the club has seen numerous renovations and enhancements. In 2012, Tom Doak and Eric Iverson of Renaissance Golf Design were enlisted to restore elements of the original Seth Raynor design, completing restoration work on 12 of the 18 holes. Doak, considered as esteemed today as Raynor was in the 1920s, commended Waialae's enduring commitment to quality, stating, "There was a dedication to quality at Waialae from the very beginning."
Today, Waialae Country Club stands as a premier member-owned private country club, garnering recognition as a Platinum Club of America, Honorable Mention Platinum Clubs of the World, and is a Distinguished Club with ELITE status by BoardRoom magazine.
