Roche Harbor Resort
San Juan Island, Washington
San Juan Island, Washington
San Juan Island, WA | Roche Harbor is a historic seaside resort located on the northwest side of the largest, most active island in the San Juan Islands located in the scenic, northern region of the Puget Sound. Roche Harbor faces Haro Strait and the Canada–United States border. The harbor itself provides one of the better protected anchorages in the islands.
Steeped in rich history and surrounded by lush gardens, the village is a short drive from nearby Friday Harbor, WA. Accommodations range from a wide variety of lodging options: luxurious modern homes, an historic hotel, (Hotel de Haro), plus a spacious and beautifully renovated, (Quarryman’s Hall) and quaint cottages.
Three renowned restaurants offer waterfront dining from fine evening service to casual café cuisine. The centerpiece of dining at Roche Harbor is McMillin’s Dining Room, named after the original owner who was known to have wonderful island dinner parties in the 1920s. McMillin was friends and business partner with Robert Buchart (who created Victoria’s Butchart Gardens for his wife Jennie) and is believed to have hosted President Theodore Roosevelt whose signature is in the hotel’s guest registry.
Our world-class marina hosts vessels of all sizes and offers whale watching tours, boat and kayak rentals, a floatplane dock, and US customs office. Additional amenities include a full-service spa, grocery store, multiple shopping destinations featuring local artists, and extensive nationally designated hiking trails. Roche Harbor Resort is more than a “hospitality operation,” it’s a one-of-a kind “multi-generational community of team members who work together like a professional family to deliver consistent and memorable experiences, rich in hospitality and meaning…” This team boasts 18 revenue generating departments who work together holistically to deliver on the collective “team why.” They also have great stories of connection, purpose and culture.
As excerpted from the book, Roche, (written by Chef William D. Shaw and James O. Fraoli), “From high school and college students, and foreign exchange students from dozens of varying countries, to local residences and neighboring islanders, Roche Harbor employs them all. “For many, working here is a cross between summer camp and their real first job,” shared Brent Snow, longtime general manager, who along with Chef Bill Shaw, Harbormaster, Kevin Carlton, and others recruit, hire and train about 200 talented young men and women every summer…It’s been said that the team culture considers their resort mission to be a “stage,” and that unique opportunities are available for those looking to work hard at what many consider the other happiest place on Earth.”
Year round, Roche Harbor has approximately 110 staff members and a total of 300(ish) employees during peak season. Learn more about employment at Roche Harbor.
