Promontory currently operates 3 golf courses: two 18-hole championship courses – the Pete Dye Canyon Course and the Nicklaus Painted Canyon Course - plus Promontory’s new 18-hole par 3 course, The Hills at Promontory (a Forrest Richardson design) which opened in the summer of 2024 to rave reviews. Promontory’s 18-hole par 3 course is the perfect complement to the two championship courses. The Hills is also home to the Cascade Green 18-hole putting course and The Golf Academy at Promontory (The GAP), complete with an impressive on-range teaching facility, indoor/outdoor hitting bays and TaylorMade Golf Fitting Center. Inside the Hills Clubhouse are four indoor golf simulators and teaching bays. Annual Dues: $22,800 (2025 full member dues)
Initiation Fee: $300,000
Number of Employees: The Promontory golf operations team consists of one Head Golf Professional for each course with 1st & 2nd assistants (year-round), plus outside golf operation staff (seasonal). The Director of Golf Instruction and Assistant Teaching Professional (seasonal), as well as the Director of Agronomy also report to this position.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Title: Director of Golf
Reports to: General Manager
Supervises: 3 Head Professionals, Director of Instruction, Director of Agronomy
General Purpose: The Director of Golf leads the Promontory golf operations from both a tactical and strategic level. Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Golf is responsible for delivering an exceptional golf experience by continuously developing and reviewing all aspects of the golf operation. The Director of Golf will take personal responsibility for and be involved in promoting and coordinating golf experiences for potential Promontory buyers and club members, as well as their accompanied guests.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide a clear vision of the Promontory Golf experience, involving the golf staff as well as managers from other Promontory departments.
Prepare and consistently review the business plan for golf operations.
Prepare a monthly written report for the General Manager and participate in monthly executive team meetings with the developer.
Annually produce a Book of Golf that informs membership of rules, staff specialties, golf tournaments, clinics, and seasonal calendar.
Grow participation in Promontory golf membership.
Design and deliver a comprehensive tournament program.
Develop budgets and manage assets to meet both financial goals and the all-encompassing exceptional golf experience.
Oversee the care and maintenance of all physical assets, inventory, and resources of golf.
Oversee the annual approved golf club capital projects.
Oversee retail operations with significant coordination with the Club’s Retail Purchasing Manager. Significant involvement in purchasing and merchandising of both soft goods and hard goods.
Oversee, promote, and coordinate the teaching and instruction programs in conjunction with the Director of Instruction and seasonal teaching professionals.
Coordinate with Food & Beverage management to ensure the ultimate golf experience.
Recruit, train, and retain professional staff to deliver on key objectives.
Recruitment, training, and retention of hourly staff and intern programs.
Ensure qualified PGA professionals are available and proactively engage with members and outside golf rounds.
Promote and develop in-house training.
Prepare capital expense proposals for budgeting.
Develop relationships with local Park City resorts/hotels to market the Promontory Golf Experience to potential buyers.
Stimulate innovation and new ideas.
Become the expert on Northstar tee sheet management to maximize member play.
Consistently work with the Director of Agronomy and course superintendents to ensure golf courses are meeting expectations.
Coordinate and lead the golf committees for input on improving the golf program.
Ensure golf programs meet the vision of multi-generational programming with active youth participation.
Develop, market, and deliver introductory golf programs to new golfers.
Maintain open lines of communication and coordination between the golf service staff and golf maintenance staff, working together to ensure the highest level of golf experience.
Winter season duties include leadership of the mountain lodges at Promontory, where staff are trained to deliver this important seasonal service.
Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements and Certifications:
PGA member and college degree or equivalency in experience.
Familiarity with Northstar club management software is desired.
Previous Experience Required:
10-15 years of experience as a PGA professional, having served as Director of Golf or seasoned Head Professional at a private club where membership entry is more than $100,000.
Prior experience in a high mountain seasonal environment.
Working Knowledge to be Acquired on the Job:
Abide by Promontory policies and procedures and submit ideas for revision. Review of current tournament programs and propose improvements and changes; working knowledge of Northstar club management software; work independently with little supervision; courteous and helpful with Promontory Club Members and employees.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand, walk, and work on feet for multiple hours a day if needed; must be able to lift a minimum of 20lbs regularly and 75lbs occasionally; must be willing to work various hours, nights, holidays, and weekends; may occasionally require multiple rounds of golf played in a day.
Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
A competitive market base salary will be based on experience. This position is eligible for participation in the company’s annual bonus program.
