Newton, NJ | In 1916, a group of forward-thinking men met in downtown Newton, NJ to discuss the acquisition of Knox Farm to create a golf and country club. In 1917, a 9-hole course was opened on the former Knox farm property and the Club was named the Sussex County Country Club. In 1945, upon reopening after its closing during World War II, the Club was renamed the Newton Country Club.
Along the way, many improvements and expansions have evolved Newton Country Club into what it is today. In 1922 the putting green was added adjacent to the Golf Shop, in the 1950s the clubhouse was expanded to include a grill room and bar, in 1969 a major expansion and renovation project was led by William Gordon of the American Society of Golf course Architects, with the assistance of Donald Ross, Devereux Emmet and William Flynn, Newton Country Club became an 18-hole course. The design preserved Newton as a “walkers’ course”, and it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that the Club added a fleet of gas-powered golf carts. Soon to be replaced by the much more pleasant electric carts.
Newton has a history of long-term leadership and professional employees. Newton’s former Head Golf Professional, Robin Kohberger, joined Newton in 1987 and retired in 2022 after 36 years of service. Robin introduced the club to the Pro-Am and enjoyed hosting Newton’s members at Pro-Am’s throughout the golf season. Also under the leadership of Superintendent, Les Carpenter, who joined Newton in the 1980’s and stayed until 2018, Newton was awarded the status of Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, a distinction that very few Golf Clubs have earned.
Newton is a very active Club, sporting a very active Ladies Golf Association, which conducts leagues on Thursdays and puts forth teams that compete with other northern NJ Golf Clubs. The Ladies Member/Guests are always well attended as are their group lessons on Friday evenings. We also hold Men’s two-man leagues on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Newton is the “home course” to both Newton High School and Pope John High School and we have a Youth Membership, (age 13-21) which is limited to 25 members and is often wait-listed.
Newton Country Club is a great place to play, to visit, and to work.
