Medinah, IL | In the early 1920s, the club's founders, a group of Shriners from Chicago's Medinah Temple, sought to create a country retreat. The group was looking for rolling terrain, bountiful trees, and an ample water supply. Several parcels of land in an area then known as Meacham's Grove, in northern DuPage County, were selected to build Chicago's finest private golf courses.
Tom Bendelow, a world-renowned Scottish architect, was retained to design the original three golf courses. Course #1 was opened in 1925, Course #2 in 1926, and Course #3 in 1928. Course #3 has hosted multiple major championships and events and is scheduled to host the 2026 Presidents Cup. Notable champions at Medinah have included the names Sarazen, Nelson, Casper, Player, Irwin, and Woods. The three golf courses have had various renovations over the years, including the current reimagination of Course #3.
In the mid-1920s, while the golf courses were under construction, Richard G. Schmid was hired to plan and design the clubhouse. He blended classic lines of Byzantine, Oriental, Louis XIV, and Italian architecture lending to the style and elegance still evident today in the iconic clubhouse. It is one of the most distinct designs anywhere in the golf world.
Today, Medinah Country Club is recognized as one of the premier clubs in the United States and beyond. It includes a diverse and active membership that continues to embody tradition, family values, and championship golf.
