For the first time in over four decades, Hyde Park Golf and Country Club is seeking a new Director of Golf following the well-earned retirement of Larry Drehs, PGA, who served the club with distinction for 42 years. The successful candidate will step into a premier environment backed by incredible institutional investment. The club recently unveiled an $8.4 million Donald Ross course restoration crafted by golf architect Tyler Rae, paired with a $2 million modern refresh of the golf shop and clubhouse facilities. Position Description: The Director of Golf is responsible for leading all golf operations at the Club, ensuring that our members, families, and guests enjoy a premier private-club golf experience reflective of the Hyde Park heritage and traditions. Serving as the face of golf, the Director of Golf will embody professionalism, hospitality, and instructional excellence while overseeing all day-to-day operations, programming, staff leadership, department financials, merchandizing, and service standards across the golf experience.
The Director of Golf manages an active golf operation serving over 435 Golf Members and supporting approximately 21,000 annual rounds. The Club features a newly restored 18-hole Donald Ross designed golf course, state-of-the-art practice facilities, a caddie program, a full fleet of electric riding cars equipped with GPS, electric walking carts, and push carts. The Director of Golf is responsible for and manages the Head Professional, 2-3 Assistant Golf Professionals, and approximately 30 golf retail and outside service staff members.
Member Engagement and Hospitality
Serve as the visible, welcoming face of the Hyde Park golf franchise. Maintain high accessibility, engage with members and guests, and cultivate an inclusive club culture. Play golf regularly with members of all skill levels to foster connection, professional feedback, and reliable engagement.
Uphold the Hyde Park traditional, family-oriented culture through professional demeanor, timely responsiveness, and personalized service.
Represent Hyde Park Country Club in local, state, and PGA section professional events and competitive playing opportunities.
Drive member satisfaction through active communication, personalized experiences, and the detailed introduction of new members into the golf programming.
Ensure all golf services reflect the standards of a high-end private country club.
Coordinate with the administrative communications and social media partners to advertise the Hyde Park golf franchise to members.
Golf Operations Leadership
Oversee all daily golf operations including tee sheet management, accurate billings, tournament setup, pace-of-play systems, and golf course access.
Implement and uphold operational standards that support efficiency, safety, and an enjoyable member experience.
Collaborate closely with the Grounds Superintendent(s) on course setup, conditions, and seasonal and weekly weather needs.
Plan, organize, and execute an annual calendar of member tournaments, leagues, couples events, junior events, member-guest events, clinics, and special golf programs.
Develop innovative programming that increases member participation and engagement throughout the year.
Staff Management and Leadership
Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Recruit, hire, train, mentor, schedule, and evaluate all golf operations personnel, in partnership with human resources.
Establish clear performance expectations while providing coaching and professional development opportunities.
Conduct staff meetings, performance reviews, and participate in all required club leadership training.
Promote a positive and respectful work environment built on strong communication and collaboration.
Financial and Administrative Management
Oversee all golf shop operations including merchandising, inventory management, purchasing, pricing strategies, vendor relationships, and retail presentation.
Develop and manage departmental operating budgets while maintaining fiscal responsibility in partnership with the accounting department.
Monitor financial performance. Retail sales, participation levels, and operational metrics to support strategic planning and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with all Hyde Park policies, applicable PGA, and industry standards.
Course Instruction & Player Development
Deliver high-level club fittings, private instruction, clinics, and coaching programs utilizing practice areas and fitting bays.
Oversee all junior and family golf programs such as PGA Junior League and junior camps, creating engaging pathways for golfers of all ages.
Stay current with teaching technologies, fitting, and instructional practices to ensure a premium experience for all members and guests.
Tournament & Event Management
Administer a full tournament calendar including multiple men’s and women’s member-guest events, junior golf, and a strong women’s golf program for both 18-hole and 9-hole women.
Supervise the planning, promotion, and execution of all club-based and outside golf tournaments.
Consistently and fairly enforce club rules, regulations, and USGA rules of golf.
Create memorable tournament experiences that honor Hyde Park traditions and exceed member expectations.
Coordinate with grounds, dining, communications, and accounting teams to ensure seamless event execution.
Merchandising Excellence
Manage all in-house merchandising including buying, receiving, inventory controls, vendor relationships, and pricing strategies.
Maintain a premium, curated merchandise mix that reflects the Hyde Park high-end clientele and brand identity.
Design visually appealing displays consistent with industry best practices and seasonal needs.
Analyze inventory turns and review financial performance to maximize revenue and determine the most viable lines.
Caddie and Cart Programming
Support the performance and coordination of the caddie program and Hyde Park Caddie Scholarship Fund to ensure positive member experiences.
Oversee riding cart fleet and electric/push walking carts – ensuring cleanliness, safe operations, and proper maintenance in partnership with the grounds department.
Including, but not limited to, the following:
PGA Class A Member in good standing.
Significant (7-10 years minimum) private club golf operations management experience, ideally in a high-end traditional country club setting. A passionate ambassador for the game of golf.
High level of integrity. Must maintain a professional & welcoming attitude and utilize a passionate desire to provide exceptional golf service.
Partner with the GM, Grounds Superintendent, and Golf Committee to provide an exceptional golfing experience.
Display excellent oral and written communication skills and utilize them during all member, guest, and in-house communications.
Capacity to maintain a department operating budget and take quick corrective actions as necessary to ensure budget goals are achieved in partnership with the Accounting Department.
Proven success in managing staff and upholding premium golf experience for golf membership. Must be able to manage, coach, and appropriately develop direct and indirect reports. Ability to recruit, train, and evaluate staff in partnership with Human Resources.
Proven expertise in tournament management and high-level planning.
ProShop merchandizing background demonstrated retail success.
Advanced club fitting and teaching capability, including usage of modern technologies.
Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to lift 25lbs on a regular basis, and up to 50lbs on occasion.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
The club will provide a compensation and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. This includes, but is not limited to:
Salary - $150,000-165,000 based experience
Performance Incentive - Up to 30% of Salary
Golf Shop Commission - Negotiable
Instruction - ~$5,000
