Omaha, NE | The Field Club of Omaha was established in 1900 and is one of the oldest clubs west of the Mississippi River. Field Club provides over 1,050 member families and their guests with superior services, programs, and staff. Of the total membership, approximately 375 are Full Golf Members, 500 are Social Members with limited golf access, and 125 Clubhouse Members with limited golf access. The Club boasts a multi-year wait list for Golf, Social, and Clubhouse Memberships.
FCO averages approximately 23,000 rounds per year. The Golf Operations Team uses Clubessential for tee sheet, point of sale, inventory, and club management software, and Golf Genius for tournament management software.
The Club has a supportive and active membership with many families having enjoyed membership for generations. The Club has had year-over-year growth across all membership categories for 7 consecutive years until 2020, when the Club reached full membership. There are many reasons for this success, chief of which include the revitalization of the midtown Omaha area and increased club-wide programming. The membership enjoys a 5200-yard par 67 golf course, with tree-lined fairways and small target greens. The Club is active throughout the year and hosts a full calendar of activities and events in all areas, with a high emphasis on family activity.
In July 2022, the Membership voted to approve the implementation of a monthly Capital Dues Program to create a consistent and reliable source of capital funding. Following the implementation of this Dues Program, the Board of Directors approved a $12 million renovation of the Club’s three main amenities from 2022-2024.
Golf Course updates, undertaken in phases starting Fall 2021. The Club has a Golf Course Master Plan, which was created in partnership with Golf Course Architect Todd Clark from CE Golf Design. Phase one of the master plan started in 2021 and was completed in 2023. This phase included two new green complexes, several new and renovated bunker complexes, five new tee complexes, expanded practice facilities, and drainage, irrigation, and cart path improvements. It is anticipated that the Club will embark on phases two and three of the master plan over the next five years. These phases, done in conjunction with each other, will be completed over multiple years so as to limit the disruption to member play. This multi-million dollar improvement will include the rerouting of four holes and renovation of two others, but the Club anticipates having a full 18-hole course available for play the majority of each year, with disruption limited to the fall and spring seasons and only impacting 1-2 holes each year.
The Pool complex was completely renovated over the winter of 2022-2023. A new baby pool with modern features was built, and the mechanical systems were replaced for the Club’s main pool while keeping the footprint and history of one of the largest pools in the Midwest. The Club’s main pool dates back to 1927.
The Clubhouse renovation, the largest and most ambitious project in the group, was completed in only eight months during the winter of 2023-2024. Included in this renovation was a 3,500 sq. ft. addition housing three state-of-the-art golf and activity simulators (Full Swing) located near the renovated golf shop. A 50-seat pub was built adjoining the simulator facility, and a new family-centric sports bar replaced a dated mixed grille on the main floor. Following completion in June 2024, the Club shifted from a single outlet dining facility hosting 100 members and guests to three dining outlets capable of hosting 350 members and guests.
The Golf Course has had many variations since its beginning in 1900. Initially a 9-hole design, the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1902 and stretched from Woolworth Avenue south to Center and 36th Street west to 45th Street.
In 1905, FCO was host to the first Nebraska State Golfing Championship. The following year, the 6th Trans-Mississippi Golf Tournament was hosted at FCO. In total, the Club has hosted over 30 State Golfing Championships.
Nebraska’s first national golfing championship came in 1941 when the US Amateur Championship was held at FCO. To this day, FCO is one of three courses in the state to have hosted a national golfing championship. Field Club’s most famous member is Johnny Goodman, the most recent amateur to win a professional major tournament when he won the 1933 US Open. With the rise of full-time professional golfers, Johnny will likely be the final amateur to ever win a professional major.
Following the completion of the 1941 US Amateur, the Club lost 50 acres of its championship golf course to the Veterans Memorial Hospital and grounds. On the remaining 80 acres, a shortened 18-hole par 67 course was developed. Several modifications and improvements have been made in the years since then, but the general layout and routing remain the same to this day.
