Head Golf Professional
Chevy Chase, MD | Columbia Country Club, a private, member-owned club, conveniently located inside the Beltway in idyllic Chevy Chase, Maryland, is the successor of the Columbia Golf Club. The Columbia Golf Club was organized on September 29, 1898. Since 1898, Columbia has been a special place and has earned a tremendous reputation for its championship golf course, its first-class dining facilities, and an unparalleled social fabric. Columbia is not easy to capture in words or pictures. Its magic is more about how the people make you feel. What makes Columbia unique is the membership. Our members – distinguished, diverse, and colorful – have bonded together to consistently provide a “Warm Columbia Welcome”. The membership and employees at Columbia also share an extremely close bond, which became even stronger during the pandemic.
Columbia Country Club enjoys a rich history, tradition, and heritage. The golf course, completed in 1911, was designed by Herbert Barker, a noted golfer and course architect of the day. Walter Travis made extensive renovations to the course in 1915. The U.S. Open was held at the Club in 1921, and won by Englishman, Jim Barnes. President Warren Harding presented the Champion's Trophy. The Club also hosted the 2003 United States Junior Amateur Championship and, most recently, hosted the 2021 United States Girls' Junior Championship.
Throughout its rich history, only three head golf professionals have worked at the club, Fred McLeod, William Strausbaugh, and current Head Golf Professional Robert Dolan.
FRED MCLEOD won the US Open in 1908, and in 1910 and 1911 he missed out getting into the play-off by one shot. He twice won the North and South Tournament in 1909 and 1920 and the Senior PGA Championship in 1938 played each year at Augusta National. In 1919 he finished one shot behind Jim Barnes in the US PGA and in the 1921 US Open he tied with Walter Hagen for second place. In the Open at St Anne's in 1926 he finished seventh, rounding off one of the most remarkable careers in golf, lasting over twenty years at the top level.
BILL STRAUSBAUGH "Coach", served from 1974 to 1977, as president of the Middle Atlantic PGA, where he had held every executive office and was the only person ever to receive every national award the PGA presents to a club pro. He was inducted into the Middle Atlantic PGA Hall of Fame in 1989 and was PGA Teacher of the Year in 1992. In 1979, in recognition of Mr. Strausbaugh's training of young golf professionals, the PGA created the "PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award" which bestows special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional, who personally displays outstanding integrity, character, and leadership through a commitment to mentoring and making significant impacts on the careers of PGA Professionals.
BOB DOLAN has served as the Head Golf Professional at Columbia Country Club since he succeeded the legendary Coach Strausbaugh in 1995. Bob has dedicated his career to improving the enjoyment of the game for his members, growing employment opportunities for his peers and his unfailing commitment to his career can only be surpassed by his commitment to his family.
The essence of Columbia is not defined by the dining rooms or the athletic facilities or even the social activities, but by the friendship, fellowship and genuine camaraderie of the membership and staff that has become known as the Spirit of Columbia.
The Head Golf Professional at Columbia Country Club is genuinely the “Ambassador of Golf” of the Club.
