ABOUT CAPE FEAR COUNTRY CLUB

Wilmington, NC | Cape Fear Country Club, located in beautiful Wilmington, North Carolina, is hiring a Director of Golf to join its storied history. Cape Fear, founded in 1896, has the honor of being the oldest private Country Club in North Carolina and, one of the five co-founders of the Carolina Golf Association formed in 1905. Along with hosting the Azalea Open for the years 1949-1971, we are also a permanent Rota member for the Carolinas Amateur. The beloved Donald Ross golf course just went through a $6 million renovation with famed architect, Andrew Green with the scope of the renovation including all green complexes being rebuilt and re grassed with Champion Bermuda, all bunkers redesigned and constructed along with the addition of several tees and a championship practice area that includes the 9-hole Par 3 “Azalea” Short Course. The club is in the planning phase for a new state-of-the-art golf performance center with an expected completion in late 2023.

Today, it is the vision of Cape Fear Country Club to maintain our status as one of the premier country clubs in North Carolina. As part of that vision, the Club is currently in search of a Director of Golf to begin in January 2023. The ideal candidate will demonstrate impeccable leadership skills, promote team member growth and engagement, and consistently deliver an exceptional member and guest experience.


Summary: The Director of Golf is the golf ambassador of the Club, embodying the highest levels of integrity, professionalism, and diplomacy. This person will directly manage all areas of the golf operation and work closely with other department heads, while reporting to the Chief Operating Officer. The Director should have strong merchandising skills and be able to offer creative programming to members, their families, and guests of all ages.

  • Develop a strong relationship with the membership.

  • Successful opening of Golf Performance Center in 2023 with appropriate staffing levels and programming for all ages and abilities.

  • Maintain a profitable golf merchandise operation.

  • Understand and maintain the unique history and culture of Cape Fear Country Club.

DETAILS:

Job Task include, but are not limited to:

  • Is highly visible, engaging, and personable with an emphasis on anticipating and communicating member and guest needs.

  • Collaborates daily with all department heads, specifically the COO and Golf Course Superintendent.

  • Builds and develops a strong, cohesive team through motivation, empowerment, mentoring, and continuing education.

  • Manage the Golf Operation in a fiscally responsible manner.

  • Hire, train, and ensure excellent performance of golf staff.

  • Manage golf operations, including bag storage, cart fleet, pro shop, and driving range, ensuring daily duties are performed by staff.

  • Partner with Director of Greens and Grounds to ensure physical assets (carts, equipment, etc.) are maintained appropriately, following manufacturer’s requirements.

  • Coordinate all golf programs, tournaments, and social activities; maintain calendar of events and ensure successful execution.

  • Work with Golf Activities Committee and the Club’s marketing/communications team in such a way as to promote and ensure the best possible programming is available to members and guests.

  • Design and implement staff performance strategies that promote a positive workplace, enhance key employee retention, and improve overall employee satisfaction.

  • Annually review personnel on their performance, train and coach team, conduct staff meetings, and mentor them for their professional growth in the golf industry.

  • Take initiative in communicating with all department heads on daily activities.

  • Develop and maintain active lesson and clinic programs to teach the techniques, rules, and etiquette of the game of golf to individuals and classes, including juniors.

  • Exhibit a pleasant attitude at all times and always maintain proper Golf Pro – Member relationships; assist members in solving any problems which may arise relative to the golf operation.

  • Stock the Pro Shop with all necessary items of equipment, clothing, and footwear, catering to tastes of membership and maintaining an attractive, pleasant atmosphere in the Pro Shop consistent with current industry trends; provide accurate inventory and invoice records to accounting. Ensure all standard operating procedures for sales and cost controls are in place and consistently followed.

  • Develop, implement and monitor the annual golf budget to achieve revenue and cost goals. Ensure that accounting functions and golf control practices are in place and operating to meet Club standards.

  • Provide Accounting with accurate information to facilitate billing of bag and pull cart storage, range program, handicaps, hole-in-one club, MGA/LGA dues, etc.

  • Promote Pro Shop merchandise and assist members in selecting clubs, activewear, and other related items.

  • Enforce Club rules, regulations, and policies governing the use of the golf course, putting greens, driving range, Pro Shop, golf carts and dress code; serve as arbitrator to settle golf rule disputes.

  • Utilize Jonas Club Management software to analyze sales trends, golf rounds, and member demographic utilization of golf operations.

  • Perform any other functions as required to facilitate the operation of the Club’s Golf Program or as required by the Board.

CANDIDATE SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Exceptionally strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Proven success at high-level private club.

  • Verified track record of developing and advancing assistant professionals.

  • Leadership, management, and delegation skills to successfully develop a golf department to fulfill the Club’s mission and culture.

  • Strong business management skills including finance, accounting, cash flow, budgeting, merchandise management, open to buy, and forecasting skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal and communication skills.

  • Skilled player who personifies professionalism on and off the golf course



EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Accomplished PGA professional (Class A Certification) with a minimum of ten years of experience providing premier services in an exclusive membership environment, where Club traditions and respect are of highest importance.

  • Strong, visionary leader who is reliable and professional, with effective listening and communication skills and an intense desire to provide excellent service.

  • All candidates will work to ensure the fulfillment of the Club’s mission to provide a warm and friendly environment for our members and guests, through commitment and dedication with a personal touch.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Salary is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes base salary plus incentive bonuses and lesson income.
