Park Crest Library hosts a Maker Space area in addition to circulating books and welcoming classes. Our Maker Space is a permanent area that offers Makey Makeys, Little Bits, Zentangle, Legos, Black Out Poetry, K'Nex, 3D puzzles, Hour of Code, Snap Circuits, Sphero robots, a button maker, and a sewing machine. What can you make in our MakerSpace?
An after school class is offered once a month to encourage Making, Creating, and Inventing. Most classes are free but a few have a minimal fee to cover materials.
All classes that visit the library will hear book talks on the Lone Star titles. These books are recommended by Texas Librarians for all middle grade and teen readers. Several library activities revolve around this list of books. Read them to be familiar and to participate.
In March we create a book bracket for a battle of the books. Our 16 most circulated titles are pitted against the 16 most popular Lonestar titles. Students have 24 hours to vote online for their favorite title. We start with 32 titles and work our way down to 1 BEST read book. Which title will it be this year?
Every year all the middle schools in Pflugerville ISD select a title to ALL READ and then pass to our friends. The title is great for 6th - 8th graders and leads to great discussions and fun activities. We will host an event in the spring for all students that participate in Read It Forward by reading the book and talking about it with the librarian. Watch for the announcement of this year's title.
Book clubs meetings are held weekly. Book club members select a title together and read it to prepare for the next book club. We encourage students reading outside their comfort zone to read books they wouldn't pick up otherwise. Discussing books with friends will bring you new ideas and understandings. Grab a book and a friend.
