Mission
Increase academic achievement of newcomers by providing targeted English language instruction in all core content areas while providing an environment for a successful transition into life in the United States.
Who we serve:
Newly arrived students from non-English-speaking countries
Non-English-speakers
Student eligible for placement in grades 9-12
Students with interrupted formal education
What we do:
Focus on the individual academic needs of every student
Offer targeted instruction designed to develop English language proficiency
Orient students and families to systems and procedures of PfISD
Provide students with basic survival skills in the school environment
Encourage students to continue their education and increase their access to long-term educational opportunities
Promote intercultural communication while promoting respect for our students and their native countries
Academic Services:
Students will have access to ESL English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies courses based on the individual student’s academic needs. Elective courses will be based on student’s interests and graduation requirements.
After the student’s stay in the Newcomer Program, they will be transitioned into regular courses at their home campus with the support of their home campus ESL teacher.
Student progress will be evaluated on a regular basis to ensure appropriate placement
Transportation:
Students from Pflugerville, Hendrickson and Weiss High Schools will be provided transportation to and from their attendance areas and the Newcomer Program located at Connally High School.
Curriculum and Instruction:
Teachers use a variety of research-based English Language Learner methodology to include sheltered instruction.
Teachers will implement the state-required curriculum for each core content course.
Core academic courses have language support and Sheltered Instruction strategies.
