I often compare reading to feeding your brain. When eating a balanced diet, it is important to eat a variety of foods from the food groups. Picture books are appetizers for the main meal. They get us interested in reading. They are fun. At this age, our main dish (the meat and potatoes) and vegetables are more challenging books (usually chapter books). Desserts, the sweets, are graphic novels, easy chapter books, or more picture books. To grow strong, we have to eat more than candy. We have to read more than picture books and easy chapter books. A balanced reading diet includes all types and genres of books.
