Frequently Asked Questions:
Things to buy:
Wrestling Shoes, headgear, mouth guard (required if wrestler has braces), Headgear specific hair cap, kneepads. You can buy these off of Eastbay.com or any other site. Dicks and Big 5 might supply a small variety of wrestling shoes.
Uniform
Your wrestler will receive a brand new uniform. After a competition, simply wash and dry the uniform like any other article of clothing. Your wrestler is not allowed to lend their uniform to another wrestler, nor swap their uniform. I will collect the uniform during and directly after league finals. If the uniform is becomes damaged or lost, the cost of the singlet is $80.
Dress during match days
Wrestlers need to represent themselves and the team seriously on match days. Our dress code is either a tie and collared, button down shirt or a dress. If you do not have a tie at home, I can provide one. If your wrestler did not purchase warm-ups, the KJHS PE uniform will work perfectly.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. If a wrestler cannot attend because of prior engagements like doctor’s appointments or illness or emergencies in a family, it must be cleared with the coach. If a wrestler misses the practice before a match for any reason, they cannot wrestle in that dual meet. After school detentions will also result from wrestlers not participating in competitions as well as non-suits in PE, referrals, etc. Wrestlers who accumulate too many absences may be dismissed from the team.
Match Times
Dual Meets normally start at 4:30 PM. Sometimes we (the coaches) run into hang ups and the match starts a little later. Matches last between 1-2 hrs, sometimes longer. We do not know when or if your wrestler will compete. This is also the same for the league finals. We can only estimate.
Will my wrestler get a match during a dual meet?
We try to get everyone a match during the dual meets. We try our best to pair up the kids with same skilled opponents to get the best possible learning experience. A wrestler’s best chance of wrestling is if they are the best kid in their weight class. The chances of wrestling diminish if the wrestler is the 2nd or 3rd or 4th best wrestler in their weight class. We will determine this as we get closer to competition and we will hold competitions every week to increase the competitiveness and opportunity in the room. If the opposing team has a large squad (traditionally Petaluma, Windsor, Lawrence Jones, Healdsburg) then there usually will be an opponent for them to wrestle. In general, there usually plenty of wrestlers from 100 lbs to 140 lbs. It thins out below that 100 lbs and above 140 lbs. The smaller teams are less likely to have wrestlers in every weight class.
Is it necessary to attend matches if it is unlikely that my wrestler will wrestle?
Even though it is entirely possible that your wrestler may not compete, it is essential that wrestlers make an effort to attend all competitions. Wrestling IS a team sport, and we try to do our best for our team, including supporting them by cheering on our teammates at matches.
League Finals
Every practice and competition is geared for our season end League Finals. It is our ultimate gauge in our performance and learning for the year. Our season is short, and the league tournament is the ultimate experience for the junior high wrestler. I strongly encourage participation for this tournament. Everyone who attends will have matches. If for some reason your wrestler is not able to attend, I need to know as soon as possible.
Wrestling should commence between 9-10am on the day of league finals. The first round will last around 2-3 hours. Wrestling should be completed by 4-5pm. Your wrestlers could have as many as 4 matches and as little as 1 match. There will be a Varsity competition and a separate JV competition. Placers 1-3 will earn medals for both competitions.
Eligibility
Students must have at least a 2.0 and no F’s on their previous grading report. Students who with discipline issues inside and outside of school may not be eligible for the week of competition and beyond. Please refer to the student planner.
