Throughout the school year, 5th grade ELA students will develop good habits of independent reading and writing through a wide range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. These texts will feature historical events and key figures ranging from the Pre-Columbian era to the American Revolution. They will serve to build a solid foundation of background knowledge and rich vocabulary, while also developing a range of skills to become sophisticated writers of informational, analysis, narrative, and opinion text. Our goals center around meeting the Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts and Social Studies. You can access these standards on mdek12.org.

Overview:

- First nine weeks: Students will learn about Native Americans in the pre-Columbian era and will read Children of the Long House by Joseph Bruchac.

- Second nine weeks: The second nine weeks will begin with the Age of Exploration as we read Pedro's Journal by Pam Conrad. We'll then move into colonization, reading Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone which is set in the historic Jamestown colony.

- Third nine weeks: Continuing colonization, students will begin the third nine weeks by reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. After that, we will begin learning about the American Revolution with Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson.

- Fourth nine weeks: We will wrap up the year with the American Revolution, reading Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes.

What parents can do to help their child:

Please, encourage your child to read at home for both school and pleasure. Feel free to check out the books listed above so you can read along and discuss the book and historical ideas with your child. Establish a routine homework time and setting.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time throughout the year. I am looking forward to a great year in 5th grade!
