Southport Baseball enters the 2026 season with continuity, experience, and a clear sense of direction. The Cardinals are coming off a 14–11 season in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of improvement under Head Coach Brendan Dudas. After progressing from 6 wins to 9 wins to 14 wins over the past three seasons, the program now returns to a schedule built largely around familiar opponents, competitive conference play, and a number of meaningful games that will shape the spring.
The season begins on March 26 with the annual Red-White Scrimmage, which serves as both a fundraiser and a community event. Alumni are invited back, and it provides an early opportunity to connect past and present players before the official start of the season. Four days later, Southport opens its regular season at home against Brebeuf Jesuit. The game carries added significance as it will be the first official contest played on the program’s new turf field. It also serves as a rematch of last year’s Marion County Tournament loss to Brebeuf, a 9–6 game that was competitive throughout.
The opening stretch of the schedule continues with a mix of returning opponents and new additions. Southport travels to Ben Davis before returning home to face Decatur Central, a 16–12 team from a year ago. Indianapolis Lutheran follows, bringing a 21–10 record and a Top-50 ranking into the matchup. Southport defeated Lutheran 8–5 last season, making it one of the early benchmarks on the schedule. Covenant Christian appears as a new opponent before conference play begins with a trip to Terre Haute South. Southport won that matchup 7–2 last season, one of several conference results that will be revisited in 2026.
This season marks Southport’s final year competing in Conference Indiana alongside Columbus North, Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Terre Haute North, and Terre Haute South. The Cardinals split results within the conference last year. They picked up wins against Terre Haute South and Columbus North, including a 3–2 extra-inning game, while dropping games to Bloomington South, Bloomington North, and Terre Haute North. Each of those teams returns to the schedule, providing direct carryover from last season’s results. Bloomington South finished 17–7 and ranked inside the Top 30 in the state. Terre Haute North went 18–9 and finished inside the Top 50. Bloomington North posted a 15–11 record and held Southport to two runs in a 2–0 game. The conference schedule remains one of the most consistent measuring points across the season.
April features a dense portion of the schedule that combines competition with several program-centered events. Southport hosts Perry Meridian on April 17 in a game that will include Alumni Night, a township rivalry atmosphere, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Cardinals defeated Perry Meridian 10–0 during the regular season last year before falling to them 6–0 in sectional play. That contrast gives the matchup additional context. Later in the month, Southport hosts Mooresville, a 16–12 team that the Cardinals defeated 8–6 on the road last season. Greenfield-Central follows as part of Future Cards Night, an event that brings middle school and youth players onto the field during pregame introductions.
The Marion County Tournament returns in early May, with Southport opening at home against Franklin Central. Southport won that matchup 10–2 last season. The tournament structure allows for multiple games in a short window, culminating in the championship at Victory Field. Last year, Southport advanced before being eliminated by Brebeuf. The format remains an important part of the schedule, both competitively and structurally.
As the season moves into the final stretch, several of the most notable opponents appear. Southport hosts Center Grove, a 27–5 team that finished ranked third in the state last season. The Cardinals also face Triton Central, which won 20 games, and travel to North Central, which finished 19–10 and ranked inside the Top 75. Guerin Catholic, another winning program, has been added to the schedule as well. These games are paired with returning opponents such as Beech Grove, Greenwood, and Lawrence Central, all of whom Southport defeated last season. Southport went 3–0 against Beech Grove, outscoring them 36–7 across three games.
10 opponents finished above .500 in 2025
6 opponents ranked inside the Top 75
4 opponents ranked inside the Top 50
Combined opponent record: 310–321
Average opponent record: approximately 13–13
Average opponent rating: 7.07 (Southport: 7.89)
Southport went 13–5 in the regular season vs returning opponents in 2025
4 of those 5 losses came against Top 75 teams
Losses included Bloomington South (#29), Bloomington North (#64), and Terre Haute North (#45)
The structure of the 2026 schedule reflects a program that has already established competitiveness and now has the opportunity to build on it. Many of the matchups are repeat games from last season, which creates clear points of comparison. Close losses and competitive wins both carry forward into this spring. With three consecutive years of improvement already established, the upcoming season will be defined by how those returning matchups evolve.

Robert Ludlow has committed to play baseball at Olney Central Community College (committed 11/9/25).
Robert has been a key part of our program’s growth, and he’s coming off a standout junior season where he led the team in home runs (2) and RBI (27) and was named to the All-Marion County 2nd Team. His ability to produce in big moments and compete every day makes him a major piece of what we do.
As a 2026 graduate, Robert will play an important role for the Cardinals this season as both a pitcher and outfielder before taking the next step to the college level. Beyond the stats, Robert has made tremendous strides in his mindset and maturity, and it’s been awesome to watch his confidence and leadership continue to grow.
We’re proud of you, Robert.
Riley Matlock has committed to play baseball at Kankakee Community College (committed 12/16/25).
A 2026 catcher and one of the toughest competitors in our program, Riley brings serious tools and leadership to the field. His recruiting profile says it best: fast hands with uphill path (98+ EVs), a 6.9 runner who moves well behind the dish, and a 77 mph arm from the crouch.
Riley is coming off a huge junior season where he earned All-Conference Indiana and All-Marion County honors. He led the team with a .578 OBP, stole a team-high 17 bases, and caught nearly every inning for the Cardinals, setting the tone with his consistency, toughness, and presence behind the plate.
Now entering his senior season, Riley has one more year as our team captain and catcher, and we can’t wait to watch him lead.
We’re proud of you, Riley.
Southport Baseball is proud to celebrate senior Nick Godsey, who capped off his Cardinal career in unforgettable fashion. Godsey was recently named both the Marion County Player of the Year and the District L Player of the Year, cementing his place among the very best in Indiana high school baseball.
On the mound, Nick was dominant. He finished the season with a 5–2 record, 2.79 ERA, and 102 strikeouts — the most in Indiana 4A baseball. At the plate, he was just as dangerous, hitting .413 with 31 hits, 20 RBIs, 7 doubles, a triple, and a home run, all while posting a .472 on-base percentage.
His two-way excellence powered Southport to a 14–11 record, the program’s best mark in more than two decades. Along the way, he also earned a coveted spot in the North/South Indiana All-Star Game.
A four-year starter and the heartbeat of the program, Godsey’s legacy stretches well beyond the stat sheet. Coaches and teammates alike point to his relentless work ethic as the key to his success. “It’s no coincidence Nick achieved everything he did. He’s the hardest worker in our program,” said Coach Dudas.
Next year, Nick will take his talents to Volunteer State Community College, where his journey is just beginning. While he’ll be deeply missed in Southport red and white, the Cardinals can’t wait to watch him continue to thrive at the next level.
Congratulations, Nick. Thank you for everything you’ve given to Southport Baseball.
The 2024–25 season will go down as one of the most memorable in Southport Baseball history. The Cardinals finished with a 14–11 record, marking the program’s most wins since 2007–08 (12) and the first winning season since 2017–18 (10–9).
From start to finish, this group battled and delivered statement victories along the way. Highlights included:
A run to the Marion County Tournament semi finals, including a thrilling win over Lawrence North
Extra-inning thrillers, including a 2–1 walk-off win over Pike and a 3–2 win over Columbus North
10–0 rivalry triumph over Perry Meridian
Strong wins against Franklin Central, Mooresville, Columbus North, and 1A State Champion Lutheran
Behind the bats and arms of a hardworking senior class, the Cardinals proved they could compete with anyone in the county. Their efforts not only secured a winning record but also set the standard for future Southport teams.
While the season ended with a sectional battle against Perry Meridian, the impact of this historic run will last far longer. For the first time in nearly two decades, Southport Baseball has reestablished itself as a winning program, and the future is brighter than ever.
