Carol Meyer

Carol Meyer was an early advocate for women’s athletics at Perry and her facilitative spirit paved the way for girls’ sports at the school.  Carol was hired as a Physical Education instructor and began laying the groundwork for female athletes to become part of the sports culture at Perry.  Before Carol’s arrival, Perry girls only participated as cheerleaders or statisticians.  In the early years, the girls participated in an annual event known as the Black and White basketball game.  When high school sports for women became a reality in the 1970’s, Carol had her Panthers ready.  During the  1973-74 season, girls’ varsity basketball became a reality.  With the help of Coach Banks, the Panthers were off and running.  The 1975-76 season saw the Panthers capture their first Federal League title in women’s history.  Hall of Famer Kay Port led the team in scoring, followed by Molly Lloyd and Linda Guiffreda.  The basketball staff was assisted by the addition of Coach Art Carlson as Coach Banks moved to coach the first volleyball team in Perry history in the fall of 1975.  The 1976-77 Panther basketball team really came of age with an unblemished mark in the Federal League and an overall record of 10-4.  The 1977-78 girl’s basketball team finished with a 14-3 record and tied for the Federal League title with Jackson with a 10-2 league mark.  In 1981, Coach Meyer helped the softball team get established before turning over the reigns to Hall of Fame coach Bob DiAntonio.  As the 1970’s came to a close, female athletes had become an integral part of the sports culture at Perry, finding success under the watchful eye of George Green and Debbie Schlie in Volleyball, Coach Nate Van Wey and Coach Green in Track, Coach Bob Bird in Tennis, Coach Bill Pritchard in Swimming, and Coach Jeff Greenfelder in Cross Country.  From Hall of Famers Denise Callahan, Kay Port, Denise Dietz, Linda Garfield, and Sue Koch to future female Hall of Famers, the pioneering enthusiasm of Coach Carol Meyer is one that is still felt in the halls and athletic fields of Perry athletics.

Sue Koch

Sue Koch was a key cog in the early years of women’s athletics at Perry High School.  Sue lettered in Volleyball during the program’s early years and was a high jumper her senior year for the Perry track team.  It was on the basketball court where she really made her mark.  She was an essential member of the first girl’s basketball team to win a Federal League title at Perry.  Upon graduation, Sue set a season record for most games played (36) at the University of Cincinnati and sits fourth all-time in games played for the Bearcats (124).  Sue continues to share her love of basketball by teaching the game in China.
