Our Story

“It’s an unbelievable opportunity for our kids,” - Chef Adam Crawn

“We set out with a vision to take what was already a great school system and make it that much better,” Superintendent Scott Beatty.

The program had been housed at Canton South High School but when Canton Local decided to build a new building, the culinary program was left without a home when the new school opened in the fall of 2017. Since losing its culinary space at Canton South High School, the career tech compact that includes Perry Local, Osnaburg Local, Canton Local and Sandy Valley Local, students began their work using a kitchen at the McKinley Eagles Club in Perry Township. Perry Local Schools wanted to take over the culinary arts program with plans to move the program into space once occupied by the district’s now defunct building trades program. As plans progressed, it became apparent it would be too costly — an estimated $750,000 — to refurbish the area. District officials had also been seeking additional gym space to house youth athletic programs and provide more options for programs. They also had dreams of honoring those who have embodied Perry pride.

From there, the Perry Career and Wellness Center began to take shape.

When culinary students entered their new home in the Spring of 2018, they found a classroom instruction space as well as a culinary lab that features a dish washing area, freezer and cooler, a large island and prep area, cookers, ovens and stoves. There is also a locker room for the students. The kitchen area is separated from the main dining space by a wall with a pass-through window. About $250,000 in state funding is paid for the culinary lab and equipment.

A large dining space with seating for about 160 people allows for the culinary students to serve meals. The dining space can be divided by a partition. The rooms can be used as meeting space and includes televisions that broadcast events going on in the gymnasium as well as cable programing. Projection screens are available in both spaces. The dining room features large windows, plank wood floors and exposed ceilings. The space opens onto a patio area that will includes a stage. The large window doors fold to expose the patio. The stage provides unlimited opportunities for an outdoor venue that is unique to the area. The patio looks out to the football stadium. The main entrance to the facility has a large Perry “P” logo above the door that is back-lit. "The dining and meeting space allows for limitless possibilities from team meals, to birthday parties to a meeting space for local organizations." - Superintendent Scott Beatty
