At Southway Elementary School, we prioritize creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive
environment for all students. To support this goal, we have implemented an Alternative Recess
plan called the Reflection Zone, designed to help students reflect on their behavior, develop
self-awareness, and learn constructive strategies for social interactions during their typical
recess time and throughout the school day.
Students may be placed in alternative recess if they engage in behaviors such as:
Unsafe Behaviors:
Pushing, shoving, hitting, tackling
Unwanted touching or rough physical play
Disrespectful or Offensive Conduct
Inappropriate or offensive language, including discriminatory remarks
Disrespect toward adults or peers
Non compliance with teachers' instructions
What Students Do While in the Reflection Zone:
This time is structured to encourage reflection and promote positive behavioral growth, with
activities including:
● Think Sheet Reflections: Guided prompts to help students assess their actions and,
when appropriate, write an apology letter
● Reading Materials: Age-appropriate books and articles to support social-emotional
learning, such as:
● Activities for Self-Regulation:
○ Self-Control Card Game
○ Emotional Rollercoaster Board Game
○ Exploding Emotions and Breaking Barriers
We believe these resources empower students with strategies to develop emotional control,
problem-solving skills, and respectful peer relationships.
