Learning Commons
Why a Library Learning Commons?
Why a Library Learning Commons?
A learning commons expands the idea of a library to include not only print and digital resources but to also include a space where students can come to collaborate, create and explore. The learning commons is a student-centered (versus resource-centered), flexible space where students have tools to create, space to collaborate, research options and expert information. Instead of being archives of information, many libraries are transitioning into library learning commons.

FLEXIBILITY: We have rearranged the shelves in the library to create a more open and inviting space which better highlights the resources we have. The flexible space and furniture can be arranged as needed to create an optimal environment for collaboration among students and teachers. The open space can also be used for a variety of purposes and can serve as an extension of the classroom.

COLLABORATION: We are trying to create a collaborative environment between teachers, librarians and students by encouraging use of the library for collaborative projects, meetings, activities and events. We want to provide flexible scheduling and keep the library open as much as possible for student and teacher use.

SOCIABILITY: Social space is a critical ingredient to the success of a learning commons. To fully engage students, we want to provide an atmosphere that is welcoming and inviting for both students and teachers.

SERVICE: The role of librarian has never been more important than it is today with the ever growing information that students can access. As certified librarians, Mrs. Wenning and I want to support staff and collaborate with staff and provide students with support, instruction and direction. We also have created a website to provide access to the library resources 24/7. A Library Learning Commons link can be found in the quick links on the PHS homepage. http://perrylocal.org/phs/
