A Day In Our World

A Day In Our World:

Reading

We work on reading contracts to help us with 1) fluency, 2) word recognition, 3) character development, 4) setting, 5) retelling and main ideas. We will be working with Phonics for Reading, Words Their Way, and Corrective Reading to help us with our word families, fluency, and word building skills. This year we will take a learning journey with "Fairy Tales." We will explore the characters by looking at their actions, feelings and motives. We will keep a reader's response journal to reflect on the story and help us with reading comprehension.

Writing

We use the Writer's Workshop to help us set goals as writers. In our first writing unit, we will look at ourselves as "WRITERS". Throughout the year we will cover units on Narrative, Persuasive, and Opinion writing genres. We will write personal narratives, fictional stories (our own versions of Fairy Tales), opinion papers, and persuasive letters. We will build stamina for writing, practice the writing process: rough draft, edit, rewrite, publish. We are also building our vocabulary by using mentor texts to help us build our word banks. We are also learning parts of grammar and exploring sentence structure.

Math

Each student in the Resource Room will work at their individual level and build their skills to meet their personal goals. We will be working with Common Core grade level math objectives. Some of the areas we will be covering as a group are: Time and Money, Regrouping with Addition and Subtraction, Perimeter and Area, Shapes, Fractions, and Basic Math Facts.
