There are three types of throws we will focus on: The Power Throw, The 7, & The Full Throw.
Main pointers at this point
Release (comes off the pointer finger, not the pinky)
Strong Whip (moving your throwing arm as fast as possible with a good release angle)
Not looking at the discus when you throw. Your momentum/whip should be so strong that it actually turns your body all the way around
Once you get the power throw down, the next step is a "seven throw" (also called south african but we will just call it a 7. The reason being is that you're essentially moving in the circle in the shape of the number 7.
The 7 is what you do before you start learning full throws. It teaches creating speed in the circle, which will add distance to the throw.
The twist here is that you might be someone who will master the 7, but never get the hang of the full throw. What you can do in that case is to do a 7 throw from inside the circle (which is legal).
The full spin is extremely difficult and takes a ton of practice. There are high school students who are 2+ years in and still struggling.
You must keep the discus up (throwers have the tendency to keep it low ("in their pocket") which is a problem. Remember, low disc = low throw.
You must "move the circle" which means you must generate speed in the back to get to the front. Throwers have a tendency to spin like a top in the back of the circle and not generate any speed.
Overall, I would focus on the building blocks of the power throw and once you master that move onto the 7. There are high school students right now who are still not on 7's so understand this is a difficult throw and will take time.

Basics to throwing a shot put
You cannot step on or over the front of the circle. You also, must walk out of the back of the circle when done throwing. The goal is to throw further than everyone else. It is more of a push than a throw. If you try to throw, you can seriously injury yourself. We want to think of an incline bench press when we push the shot put out and into the field.
