Preparatory webinars will facilitate an initial synthesis of topics critical to the thematic area. Key experts from the planning team are invited to share relevant insights and research findings. Each webinar will identify critical issues and suggestions that will guide discussions at the May workshop. Thematic areas and dates for the webinars are listed below:
Session 1 (Feb 13, 2019) Computational thinking and digital/media technology in learning
Session 2 (Mar 13, 2019) Personalized learning, shifting role of the teacher and the future of learning
Session 3 (Apr 17, 2019) Crossing regional, national, cultural, ethnic, economic boundaries in STEM project-based learning
Webinar 1: Computational thinking and digital/media technology in learning
This webinar kicks off a series of discussions leading to the May workshop. It explores the computational thinking, originally proposed by Jeannette Wing in 2006 as a crucial competence for school learning. Three experts share their perspectives on computational thinking and applied research that will shape the role of computational thinking as a unifying priority in curriculum and school-age learning.

Webinar 2: Personalized learning, shifting role of the teacher, and the future of learning
What it means to be a school teacher in 2019 differs from what it meant in the not-so-distant past. What it means to be a teacher in 2030 will be even more different, in an era of change accelerants that include the rise of big data, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, and especially for educators, increasing attention to and tools for personalized learning. Schools of the future will more regularly feature personalized learning even while they incorporate local and distributed collaborative learning, social cognition and problem-solving. The coming changes are breathtaking. Will teachers be ready?
With perspectives from Mexico, the US, and Finland, this webinar focuses on the profoundly shifting roles that teachers will hold in classrooms of the future, specifically looking at personalized learning. The webinar is the second of a series of discussions that related to distributed collaboration in STEM-rich project-based learning.
