Look Good, Feel Good: A Guide To Popular Hair Styles

When you go to get your hair done, do you ever have a hard time deciding what to do? I interviewed two hairstylists to get their opinions on what's popular now.

The first stylist I interviewed was Amy Isbell, who works at Hair Cuttery. For women, her most frequently asked for haircut is a butterfly haircut. This consists of long styled layers with face-framing pieces, usually not blended like typical layers. Most women also ask for Balayage highlights. This is a type of highlight that is free-handed to give a more natural and faded look. Another popular style is beach waves. A beach wave is just soft natural natural-looking curls that could be achieved with a braid. She also mentioned another frequent request: anything blow-dried. Mrs. Isbell’s personal favorite women’s hairstyle is anything layered. She also loves highlights and multi-toned colors. 

For men, the most commonly asked for haircut is a low taper fade, more commonly known as the temple fade. This consists of a haircut that gradually reduces hair. This haircut was originally for military men who needed something low-maintenance. A common hair color asked for is a bleached buzz. And another popular style is a perm. This consists of putting curl rods into your hair with a solute to hold the curl. Her favorite men's haircut to do is fades. I asked if Mrs. Isbell had anything else to add, and she said, “Being a hairstylist is rewarding because hairstylists make people feel better about themselves or their day.” 

I also interviewed Stacy Lynch of Tease Hair Co., and her most often asked for haircut is a shag. This consists of textured layers that progressively get longer. A common hair color requested, right now, is “bronde.” This is a brunette with blonde highlights. Since it is fall, a popular hairstyle is a textured bob, or lob, with curtain bangs or face-framing layers. A textured bob is shorter than shoulder length with layers. Curtain bangs, or face-framing layers, are pieces of hair cut around your face to accentuate your features. Ms. Lynch has a lot of curly-haired clients, so she does a lot of layers. Following that topic, her favorite styles are anything curly or cutting off a big chunk of hair, usually 5” or more. She also loves to use red or copper dyes. I asked if she had anything to add, and she said, “The best thing about my job is meeting all the different types of people and getting to connect with them.”
