College in High School credits are awarded to students who take a class that has a concurrent enrollment agreement with a local college. This agreement allows a Penn-Trafford teacher to teach their course for credit towards PT graduation and credit for the affiliated college. The student will take all of these courses at PT. The curriculum of these courses may be dictated by the college who is granting the credits.
Students enrolled in the College In High School class will be given information on registering for the college credit in the fall, the spring, or maybe both. The timeframe is dependent on when the college is offering that course. To earn these college credits, students must enroll with the college and pay the necessary fees for the credit. Each time registration is offered, that means a new set of credits can be earned. The colleges set the deadlines for registering for the College In High School credits.
Once students complete any College In High School credits, they will have a transcript from the college that partnered with PT. Students must keep a record of this so they know where to obtain those transcripts upon graduation from PT..
Examples:
AP World History in 20-21 was a course where students could earn credit three different ways.
They could sign up for the AP exam and earn credit based on how they score on that one exam.
They could sign up for History 155: Early Western Civilization in the fall through WCCC.
They could sign up for History 156: Modern Western Civilization in the spring through WCCC.
For one class, each student had the opportunity to earn credits three different ways. It would be up to the student and their family to determine which option(s) would be best for them.
Some classes at Penn-Trafford will allow students to earn both College In High School credits through a college and/or Advanced Placement credits through the College Boards. Even though these credits can be earned in one class, and they follow the same curriculum, earning the credit is done differently.
To earn AP credit students MUST take the AP exam and score within the range that their four year college will accept. This is a national standardized exam that is administered in May, with registration being completed in the fall.
To earn College In High School credit students must register for the class through the partnering college by the deadline they set. Students taking credits through Dual Enrollment DO NOT need to take the AP Exam to earn the DE credits.
What does all this mean after graduating from PT?
What does all this mean after graduating from PT?
When students graduate from PT, they can start college with credit already earned. Each college can determine which credits they will accept and for what discipline. For example, a student who wants to be a pre-med major takes AP Biology and earns a 4 on the exam. The college may want them to take their entry-level Biology, but will allow them to use the AP Biology credit as elective credits. Another example would be if a student took Survey of American Literature and they paid for the college credit. The college they decide to attend could accept that credit for a literature credit.
If you need assistance paying for the classes, PHEPLE Federal Credit Union offers financing that you can opt into. The application is to the right if you select this option.
