SPARK

STEM through Perseverance, Application, Resilience, and Kinetic Knowledge

Welcome to another school year!

My name is Ms. Obert-Thorn. I teach the new SPARK program here at Quarry Hill, and I am starting my 21st year of teaching. I am very excited to be here, and am looking forward to getting to know all of my students. I feel especially honored to be teaching in the district I attended; class of 1996!

Since my "glory days" here at Pennsbury, I have been extremely busy building my career as an educator. I attended West Chester University where I studied Education and Environmental Science. Once I completed college, I began my teaching career at the elementary level, working with second grade in Princeton, NJ. Afterwards I relocated to Raleigh, NC to teach gifted sixth grade Earth Science. After returning to the area, I taught AP Environmental Science and Photography at Pennsbury HS for 9 years. Lastly, I taught 7th Science at Pennwood for the last 8 years. This will be my 5th year at QH!

Additionally, I have designed and taught science-related camp courses (STEM and Ecology) for a program called, "Kids on Campus," at Bucks County Community College for 20 years. I completed my master's program in educational instruction at Gratz College in Philadelphia in 2007, and have completed my post-graduate work through Penn State, Manhattan College, LaSalle, and am currently pursuing my STEM certification at Rider. I am STEM certified by Project Lead The Way. In 2017 I was awarded the STEM educator of the year in the Tri-State area by Axalta and the Philadelphia Eagles!

I enjoy many activities outside of the classroom. I love spending my extra time outdoors. Camping, hiking, and kayaking are a few of my favorite pastimes.  When indoors, I love to cook and read whenever I get the chance!

I hope that you will have a memorable year in one of my classes! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you this Fall. So welcome!
