2024-2025 Season Prospectus
2023-2024 year in review
The 2023-2024 season was qnother strong one for Pennsbury as the Falcons finished 20-9 and 11-5 within the SOL National. This was good enough for second place in the Suburban One National for the second year in a row. Once again, the Falcons advanced further than anyone in their Division during the postseason, as they advanced from their 16 seed in the District playoffs to qualify for the states for a school record 5 years in a row. This was not without drama as after losing to eventual District Champion Perkiomen Valley in the round of 16, the Falcons had to travel to Neshaminy in a do or die game with their season and in some cases, careers on the line. The win at Neshaminy launched a series of wins against state playoff qualifiers and led to a state playoff game and loss at Hazelton.
Pennsbury graduated 7 seniors and they were part of a golden age of Pennsbury Basketball as they averaged 22 wins year in their career and notched 2 league championships, 2 appearances in the District semis and qualified for states 4 times
Sofia Vitucci became the 7th Pennsbury girls basketball to eclipse the 1,000 point mark and notched her 4th consecutive all league honor. She is currently playing at Harcum Junior College. Layla Matthias was also named all league and pulled an incredible 13 offensive rebounds in a win over CB South. She is room mates at West Chester with fellow Falcon Presley Foote, a member of the Rams softball team. Danielle Sherman (Albright) and Daniella MacDonald ( Wheaton/Ma) have taken their shooting touch to the college ranks and Liv Gilchrist and Susan McKeever are at Bucks County Community College and Susan is a member of the team. Head Coach Frank Sciolla became the 3rd coach in Bucks County history to go over 500 wins and was named the Philadelphia Coaches vs Cancer Chapter Volunteer of the Year.
Honors: Sofia Vitucci received 1st team all SOL honors and Layla Matthias( 2nd team) and Daniella MacDonald (HM) were also named all league. Sofia and Layla were selected to play in the 2024 All Star Labor Classic Game.
The Look Ahead
The Falcons will look to replace the leadership and production of the 7 seniors and they also were dealt a diffcult blow when sophomore Joley Hohman was injured in a tournament this past summer, and she will miss the season. Hohman was the team's leading returning scorer and primary ball handler. The Falcons must now replace 90% of their scoring and rebounding and all of their ball handling. Spots and playing time will be wide open, and the Falcons will need to navigate the highly competitive SOL National conference and within their own division they have CR South returning an experienced core and Neshaminy reloading with a group that gained tremendous experience last season.
Pennsbury will look to seniors Maggie Burns and Ava Jordan to stay in the mix. Both have tremendous experience within the culture of the program and their athleticism, toughness and leadership will be needed for a program that only has 5 players with drivers licenses. They will each adapt to different roles this year as they previously served as defensive stoppers and energy players. Emily Panaro ( '26) also returns to the varsity with her steady play and intelligence. She will ne asked to step up her rebounding in order for the smallish Falcons to survive in the rugged SOL. Sammie Haws and Shea Quenzer are sophomores that both saw varsity time last year. Haws has the ability to score the basketball and Quenzer brings energy and athleticism. Seniors Caroline Stover and Junior Bridget Mcgonigle are up from the JV and battling for minutes. There is an influx of freshman and sophomore talent that after some seasoning, have a chance to make the Falcons a difficult team to play in February.
Schedule: The Falcons will play 7 of their 22 games at home, and they open their season on Friday night, November 29th at Conwell Egan in a battle of Fairless Hills. They travel to West Windsor South over the Holidays to take on 2010 Pennsbury graduate Zak Kumor's club. There are also road games at state title contenders Landsdale Catholic, Upper Dublin and CB East.
