Pennsbury AFJROTC FAQs

1. Do I have to go in the military if I take this class? No. Most of our students don’t go in the military.

2. Is AFJROTC like boot camp? Will I be yelled at? No. It has parts that are patterned after the military (uniforms, student leaders, etc) but it’s not Boot Camp. Yelling at or hazing students is strictly forbidden

3. Do I have to pay for the uniforms? No, but you do have to pay if they need to be dry cleaned

4. How often will I have to wear my uniform? Once a week during school. Typically 20 times during the school year (due to holidays, Keystones, Finals, etc)

5. Are girls permitted to join the JROTC Yes. Classes have both male and female students as well as grades 9-12

6. Can I still participate in other activities? Yes. We have students on PHS sports teams, Band, Chorus, etc. We offer a lot of after-school activities but very few are mandatory

7. Will I have to cut my hair? Boys - maybe, your hair needs to be no longer than a certain length Girls - must have hair in a bun for inspections and in a ponytail for exercising

8. What are the benefits of JROTC? - Eligible for preferential College ROTC scholarships and reserved Service Academy scholarships - Advanced rank when enlisting in the military with at least 2 years in High School JROTC - Flight Academy: earn your private pilot’s license during the summer (if eligible) for free - Instant friends when you join - Fun and interesting class trips and events to attend

9. Do I have to be in great shape to join? No. We do have Physical Training or PT (like Phys Ed) every Friday that you have class (JROTC is an every other day class) and it’s geared for all levels of fitness

10. Can I still do “Sports Nite”? Yes. You just have to make up any work you missed

11. Can I get Honors credit for JROTC? Not yet. Administration has approved it but it won’t start until SY 21-22

12. Do I have to be a freshman to join? No, we accept students in grades 9-12. With administration approval we even have students join for the Spring semester

13. What type of credit will I get for JROTC? Most students get elective credit. But there may be times, with Administration approval, where students can get other types of credit due to their circumstances
