This semester course requires the rigorous study of fiction and nonfiction from both well-established and contemporary writers. Students should expect to participate in rigorous class discussions and explore the deeper significance and various interpretations of challenging works of literature. Honors students are then expected to examine a classic work of fiction at the independent level. Writing opportunities will emphasize an awareness of style and voice, including narrative writing. Students will continue their study of rhetoric by examining speeches and commentaries in an effort to hone their skill in oral delivery. The writing demands and the extensive reading schedule require a commitment to out-of-class preparation time.
Works studied include
J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye
Malala Yousafzai's I Am Malala
William Golding's Lord of the Flies
Sophocles' Antigone
Selections from Holt, Rinehart and Winston: Elements of Literature, Fifth Course (2007)
