RELA / Spelling

Our RELA (Reading English Language Arts) program is
HMH Into Reading.

Engaged readers become inspired writers.  This program builds a strong foundation for our 3rd Graders in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.  Students develop a confidence in themselves and we help them on their way to being a lifelong learner. Each "Module" (topic) inludes a different theme to allow students to be exposed to a variety of genres. Stories are diverse and include social and emotional learning lessons.

7 Benefits to Reading Every Night

Why Children Should Read 20 Minutes a Day and How it Impacts Development

Writing:  We start writing on Day One, right up to the last day of school!  We're passionate about the importance of written communication.  We write for many purposes: narrative, informational, persuasive, descriptive, reflective, biographical, poetry, and more!

SPELLING:  New Spelling words are shared three times during each Reading Module:  In Lessons 1, 6, and 11. We'll do Word Work with the words (use them in our writing, brainstorm more words, put them into sentences, have a Battle of the Spellers, etc.) before we test.

GRAMMARWe work on grammar every day.  It's an important part of our foundational skills in our HMH Into Reading program.

NOVELS:  Part of our Balanced Literacy Approach includes exposing our students to novels at their instructional reading level.  They are instructed in small groups.  We read and appreciate the literature, discuss and practice reading strategies, pay attention to fluency, expression, word choice, point of view, figurative language, all while developing comprehension skills.  We embed finding text evidence in our written responses to the books we're enjoying.
