Reading is structured to run as centers everyday using the PCI Reading Program which is a direct instruction program that builds sight word knowledge both in isolation and in context to develop word reading fluency and comprehension. Students work with teachers, with partners/groups and independently to build upon skills to become more independent and successful learners. Within the reading curriculum, students additionally work on writing skills through creative writing using sight words in context.
Our classroom also uses the Reading Mastery Series to work on decoding skills, sight word recognition/fluency, reading fluency and reading comprehension.
Math is structured to run as centers every day using the Able Net Math curriculum which is a direct instruction program using manipulatives and hands on practice at each student's independent level. Students work on math concepts and skills through independent work, partner/group work and working with the teacher.
Science and social studies are each taught twice a week using a combination of the News2You curriculum and thematic units. Students are able to work in groups, independently and with the teacher throughout both science and social studies. Many of the activities are hands on and allow the students to practice real-life skills and application of concepts.
Life Skills lessons and concepts are tied into our every day curriculum and activities. Students work on life skills activities during independent tasks as well as throughout the school day. Some tasks include:
Office Jobs: shredding and sorting mail
Library Jobs: Checking in books, sorting books by genre, re-shelving books
Coffee Cart: Taking, filling and delivering coffee/tea orders, counting money & making correct change
Classroom Jobs: attendance, pencil sharpener, mail, cleaning (desks, boards and sweeping)
