Hi 5-S Families!
I hope your week is going well!
Here are updates and reminders for the upcoming short week!
Curriculum Updates
Update on spelling from Dr. Sugra: "As we move into the mid-year turn we will be making a change for grades 3-6 in regards to Spelling lists. We will be moving Spelling to more of a context-based approach. Instead of lists of randomized spelling words, we will be using the words in the context of student writing. This change means you will not see formalized spelling lists coming home for grades 3-6 in the near future." This means, your child will not have spelling homework or lists for the remainder of the year.
Math: This week we learned how to find the greatest common factor (GCF) between two numbers and used the GCF to simplify fractions. Next week we will be learning how to find the least common multiple (LCM) and use the LCM to compare fractions. Your child will have math homework on Wednesday.
Reading: We wrapped up unit 3 by practicing summarizing texts to find the main idea. On Tuesday 1/16, we will take our unit 3 test and then start unit 4: understanding theme and comparing characters.

Hi, 5M Families,
In case you missed the Martic Memo today, I wanted to send out the part of the Martic Memo regarding the purchase of House t-shirts!
"The house system is off and running. Today I was able to circulate with our MARTIC HOUSE TROPHY (seen above). This week the blue house will host the trophy in our lobby showcase. Students are earning points already toward next week and the joy of being the house leaders. We have heard from parents and some of our community members about their desire to purchase a house shirt. Purchasing a shirt would allow parents to purchase an extra shirt for any reason. Some of the reasons we heard were: Less laundry, I want two, a parent who desires to support, a substitute who desires to partake when here. These shirts that are available for purchase would not have the sponsorship on the back, but the front would look just like our HOUSE SHIRTS. You can order by completing this form."

Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great week!

Hello, 5M Families,
Please see this message below from Dr. Sugra.
She had a tech hiccup and was unable to send it herself.
Dear 5th-grade parents and guardians,
I am writing with an explanation and plea for your support. Last week, a fair amount of staff time was dedicated to unraveling some conflict that was created on google meets while at home. We learned that some of our students were having a really hard time concentrating during the day due to being up until after midnight chatting with friends on their computers. We do understand that if this is from their cell phones, that we don’t have any control. But, if the platform they are using to communicate is from their district issued computers, we feel obligated to do something.
After consulting with the fifth grade teachers, Miss Miller and Mrs. Eby indicated that there is not a large amount of homework assigned online. With this information, we decided to keep the computers at school. Of course, if there is an assignment requiring students to work online, we will send them home. In the event that you feel your child desperately needs their laptop at home for school work, please reach out to Dr. Sugra directly, so we can talk about options. We hope the plan to keep computers at school helps to minimize some of the inappropriate communication concerns and discontinues late night access.
Thank you for your support as we try to ensure a safe and cooperative learning environment.

Hello, 5M Families,
I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Please see below for a fifth grade update!
Math with Miss Miller: Fifth graders have been putting their best effort forward during our patterns and expressions unit. Last week, we focused on interpreting patterns and expressions as well as plotting points on the coordinate plane. This week, we will be reviewing everything we learned in this unit and taking our chapter test on Friday, January 13th. Tuesday through Thursday night your child will bring home a few review problems for extra practice before the test. Keep up the fabulous work fifth graders!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: In the week that lead up to winter break, we wrapped up our Unit 3 Activity. This past week, we began to dig into our long-term memories and determine the difference between the theme/life lesson and the main idea of the same passage/piece. It truly stretches all of our brains and makes them STRONGER! Way to stay in a growth mindset, everyone... I know it is not always easy to do so. YOU ROCK!!!:-):-):-)
Spelling: Your child will bring home their spelling packet tonight. The packet is due Thursday and their test is Friday. Please encourage your fifth grader to study their spelling words each night!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful week!

Hi 5M Families,
I hope your week is going well. Please see below for some 5th-grade updates!
Math with Miss Miller: Fifth graders have been hard at work during our sixth unit: multiplying and dividing decimals. Last week, we focused on multiplying decimals. We also started a new project - ask your child to hear about the menu they are creating! This week, we will focus on dividing decimals. This unit can be challenging, and because of this, fifth graders will have a few review problems for homework on Monday and Wednesday nights. I am so proud of everyone's impressive effort and perseverance through this unit!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: Our fifth graders have really been staying in a growth mindset, stretching their brains and making them stronger! This week, our fifth-grade readers/writers are wrapping up the second unit on interpreting nonfiction texts, text structures, and identifying nonfiction text features. We will then move into unit three which will cover finding the main idea of a passage along with its key, supporting details, and summarizing. Way to go... YOU FOLKS ROCK!!!
Spelling: Your child brought home their spelling packet on Monday. The packet is due Thursday and their test is Friday. Please encourage your fifth grader to study their words each night!
Please let me know if you have any questions, have a great rest of your week!

Dear 5th grade parents and guardians,
Please see the message below from Dr. Sugra:
The weather forecast is not conducive for our outdoor field trip tomorrow to celebrate Veterans Day. Although the event is rain or shine, they would like to reserve the pavilion for Veterans who plan to attend.
Our field trip will be canceled and we will host some fun events at school that celebrate Veterans Day indoors. We are so sorry for these circumstances. We know that children and chaperones will be disappointed, but safety is at our top priority.
Thank you for understanding.

Hello 5M Families,
As we approach the PSSAs students will be testing on their Chromebooks. This means that all students will have to have their computer and for it to be completely charged. To ensure this students' laptops and chargers will be kept at school.
At school, we will ensure that each child has their laptop and that it is charged for the test. We will be starting this Friday, April 22nd and continue keeping them at school through May 2nd. Your child will not be given any work that requires their laptops while outside of the classroom during this time period. A blog post will be posted shortly with more information.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Math with Miss Miller: Last week, we continued our geometry unit and ended the week by learning how to find the volume of rectangular prisms and composite rectangular prisms. This week, we will review chapter 12 on Monday through Wednesday and take our chapter 12 test Thursday. Your child will have a study guide for homework on Wednesday. Then, we will move into reviewing concepts learned throughout the year. Keep working hard mathematicians!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: At the beginning of the week, we will wrap up our narrative non-fiction passage, non-fiction text features, and the three activities that go along with this lesson. Then, we will begin to review the many reading and writing concepts that we have worked very hard to learn and store in our long-term memories. Way to stay in a growth mindset, 5th graders!

March 28th, 2022
Hi 5M Families,
I hope you had a great weekend. I can't believe March is already wrapping up.
Please see below for a weekly update.
Math with Miss Miller: Wow! I cannot believe we are already in our twelfth unit of math - geometry! Last week, we focused on classifying triangles and polygons. This week we will start out by classifying quadrilaterals and then move into solving the volume of regular and composite prisms.
This week, your child will bring home a few math homework problems each night. The homework will be due the next day - the due date is on each homework sheet. This unit is very vocabulary heavy and these problems will help keep those vocabulary words fresh in their minds. They will have fewer than five problems each night. Keep working hard fifth graders!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: At the end of last week, we finished our read-aloud, The Thief Lord, and the students wrote about the most important life lesson (theme) that they learned while reading the novel. Due to this added activity, Monday, we will begin working with our non-fiction passage entitled Leonardo's Horse. We'll start learning its vocabulary, then move into reading and analyzing the piece as we identify its non-fiction text features along the way. When we've completed this, we will begin to engage with a comprehension, vocabulary, and sequencing activity. Way to stretch your brains, 5th graders, and make them stronger!
Spelling: Today, your child will bring home their spelling packet for the week, which is due Thursday. Please encourage your child to study for their test that will be on Friday!
Field Trip Permission Slip: Please make sure your child brings in their field trip permission slip for our field trip to the Fulton Theatre. No child will be able to attend the field trip without a permission slip. All permission slips are due by Friday, April 22nd.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out.
Have a great week,
Meredith
March 22nd, 2022
Hi 5M Families,
I hope you had a great weekend and have been enjoying this beautiful weather. It is amazing that we are already almost through March. Please see below for a weekly update from fifth grade.
Math with Miss Miller: We will be reviewing everything we learned in our eleventh unit, measurement on Monday and Tuesday. We will take our unit 11 test on Wednesday. As always, your child will have a study guide for homework on Tuesday night. We will start our final unit, geometry, on Thursday! I am so proud of every fifth grader's hard work, we are definitely stretching our brains each day!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: Monday and Tuesday we are wrapping up differentiating between the main idea and theme of a passage. We will wrap this up early in the week and move into reading, analyzing, and differentiating between the main idea and theme/life lesson of the same passage. I know that we will all stay in a growth mindset!!!

Hello 5M Families,
I hope you all had a great weekend.
As I continue to reflect on this school year, I am lucky to be able to teach all of your children. They are bright, creative individuals.
Unfortunately, some days certain children have had trouble controlling themselves, being respectful to their peers, and ultimately being their best selves. We have had many individual and whole-class discussions about conduct in the classroom, but we are all still working on this.
On Wednesday, February 16th every child will start on a new behavior plan that I am calling the “card method.” Every student will start on green each day. If they are struggling to be their best self, follow directions, or are preventing themselves and others from learning, they will move their card to a warning card.
If the behavior continues, they will move their card again and end up facing a consequence. They will have to spend their recess with me reflecting on their actions and completing a reflection form. If the behavior continues after that consequence, they will have a meeting with Dr. Sugra.
My favorite part of this system is that students can “graduate” from their cards. After ten days of staying on the green card, students will get to turn their cards in. This individualizes the system so children who are performing optimally every day do not need to continue with the system. There will be the understanding that the cards could come back at any time if necessary, but we are hoping that does not have to happen.
This new system will help me best serve your child and their individual needs. It will allow for a positive learning environment, but also hold children accountable for their actions.
If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you so much and have a great rest of your week,
Meredith Miller

Hello 5M Families,
I hope you are having a great weekend!
I know last week was not the first week we anticipated, but I enjoyed getting to know your child during our first three days - we are going to have a fantastic year!
Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 7th will be Day D on our 4-day cycle. That means we will be having physical education as our special. I wanted to send a reminder so your child wears sneakers on Tuesday!
Also if you have not yet filled out the parent survey please click here to complete it.
If you have any questions, please let me know!

Hello 5M Families,
I hope you had a great weekend. It is crazy that we are almost through January. Your fifth graders have been working so hard and learning a lot in the new year. Please see below for an update.
Math with Miss Miller: Mathematicians have put their best effort forward in our eighth unit: fractions and decimals. This week, we will wrap up unit 8 and take our unit 8 test on Wednesday, January 26th. Your child will bring home a study guide the night before the test for homework. We will then start our ninth unit: adding and subtracting fractions! I am so proud of every fifth grader's hard work!
Reading with Mrs. Eby: 5th-grade readers and writers continue to work hard and stretch their brains to make them stronger! We will be wrapping up our reading, analyzing and identifying the five different types of text structures this week. We will then move into a non-fiction passage entitled, "A Drop of Water". We'll read, analyze and become familiar with the liquid, solid , and gas forms of water. Keep up the excellent work...YOU ROCK!!!
Spelling: Tonight your child will bring home their lesson 12 spelling packet. Their packet will be due Thursday and their test is Friday. The lesson 12 list is very challenging so please encourage your child to study at home each night.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, thank you so much, and have a great week!
