Experiment Title: Formal Lab Report

The title should be descriptive.

For example, “Properties of Gases” is a descriptive title but “Experiment 5” is not a descriptive title.

NOTE: Only some labs require a formal report. It will be required in place of the normal post-lab analysis

NOTES:

  • The choice of a colored background, image background or just a white background for each section is up to you.
  • The only expectation is that the text is legible and easy to read.

Abstract: (one shared document for your lab group)

  • A short paragraph summarizing the experiment that was performed, including the concluding results. It should be written in a new text box.

Required: Include an embedded photo of your experimental setup or of your results (as directed). If you are having trouble with embedding the photo see the help videos (HUB).

  • A video of how you setup your experiment or what happened during the experiment (Usually optional-may be required for some labs)
  • The video can include a voice-over if desired

Theory:(one shared document for each group)

  • A brief statement of the underlying principles or theory behind the lab (1-4 paragraphs depending on the particular lab). It should be written in a new text box .

Data:(one shared document for your lab group)

  • Embed a table of all data relevant to the lab using the "insert from Drive" option. If a class spreadsheet is included, highlight your values.
  • Indicate the uncertainty in the values (i.e. to the nearest 0.01 mL or nearest 0.01 g)
  • If you are having trouble with embedding the doc see the help videos (HUB).

Calculations and Graphs: (one shared document for your lab group)

  • Use a new textbox or embed a photo of handwritten work using the "insert from Drive" option. If you are embedding photos of handwritten calculations or graphs make sure they are neat, legible, and large enough to read easily
  • Students should show one sample for each calculation that is carried out.
  • Sample error calculations should also be included.
  • Embedded graphs or other graphical organizers need to be titled, axis need to be labeled, and units need to be shown on axis.

NOTES:

  • If you save your graph in Google Drive you can embed it using the "charts" button on the right "insert" menu -last item in list
  • If you create your graph using another program (plot.ly or Logger pro), take a screen shot and upload the image. Just make sure it is large enough to be easy to read!
  • If you are having trouble with embedding the doc or image see the help videos (HUB).

Conclusion (to be done individually by each group member)

You will be given direction as to what to write, but it is expected that all conclusions to be well thought out, well written and original. This section also includes post lab questions that will be tailored to the specific lab. It can be written in this text box or embedded as a Google Doc. The text should be visible-it should NOT just be a link to the document. If you are having trouble with embedding the doc see the help videos (HUB).

Reflection: (to be done individually by each group member)

  • Students should briefly respond to the question: Why did we do this lab? If written, your 1-2 sentence response should be written in a new textbox. If you prefer, you may substitute another form of media (embedded audio clip, video clip, graphical organizer etc.) to answer this prompt. If you are having trouble with embedding media see the help videos (HUB).
  • Students should also briefly respond to the question: What is your level of understanding (partial, weak, strong, etc.) of the concepts and/or skills covered by this lab ? The purpose here is to reflect if any additional steps need to be taken to develop mastery. If written, your 1-2 sentence response should be written in a new textbox. If you prefer, you may substitute another form of media (embedded audio clip, video clip, graphical organizer etc.) to answer this prompt. If you are having trouble with embedding media see the help videos (HUB).
