Year 4 Roman Workshop
This week, our lunch hall was transformed into a bustling hub of the Roman Empire. To bring our history curriculum to life, the children took part in an immersive Roman Workshop that saw them trading their school jumpers for tunics and stepping into the sandals of a Roman citizen.
Highlights of the Day
The workshop was packed with activities designed to test both the children’s physical stamina and their creative flair:
The Testudo (Tortoise) Formation: the children learned the discipline required of a legionary. They practiced the famous testudo shield wall, locking their shields together to create an "unbreakable" shell, perfect for staying safe from incoming arrows!
Warrior Spirit: Things got serious as the children wore Roman-style clothing and applied "war paint." They reenacted a historic battle scene, learning how the Romans used superior tactics and organisation to overcome their rivals.
Metal work: On the more artistic side of Roman life, the children turned their hands to jewelry making. They carefully crafted their own metal necklaces, learning about the intricate designs and symbols that were popular in the Roman provinces.
PE update
In Year 1, the focus was all about hand-eye coordination. Through their Rackets and Balls unit, students learnt the basics of tracking movement, mastering the "ready position," and understanding the physics of a bounce.
Year 2, transitioned into Ball Skills. This unit expanded to including throwing, catching, and footwork. Whether it was a chest pass or a dribble, the emphasis was on spatial awareness and learning how to cooperate with partners to keep the game flowing.
Year 5, took things to the floor with Gymnastics. Students explored the limits of their own balance and flexibility, mastering tucks, pikes, and balances. This stage was crucial for developing core strength and the confidence to perform controlled movements with grace.
Here you can see the work from our Wow Writers this week!
Every week we will showcase the winners of our weekly writing certificate so you can see the piece of writing they won their award for.
