Year 4
This module has been an incredible success, showcasing the power of cross-curricular learning! Boudica Class has successfully woven together Science, Geography, Design and Technology (DT), and English to complete a vibrant and practical project: exploring, designing, writing, and finally cooking their very own vegetable pasta recipe next week!
This project wasn't just about cooking; it was about understanding why and how we eat. In Science, we thoroughly investigated the amazing process of Human Digestion. The children learned about the major organs and the roles they play in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
Our Geography and PSHE work explored how food brings people together. We discussed the significance of shared meals, family traditions, and how different cultures express community through cuisine.
In English, we have been learning about the features of recipes and instructional language. We have been exploring what makes a successful recipe and are writing our very own pasta recipe. Next week, we will be cooking our pasta in DT and seeing whether we can then edit our recipe to make it easier.
Here you can see the work from our Wow Writers this week!
Every week we will showcase the winners of our weekly writing certificate so you can see the piece of writing they won their award for.

Reading
We ask that parents listen to their child read at home at least three times a week to help build on the reading skills they are learning in school. A reading diary has been provided for you to record any comments about their reading practice and to be signed once your child has read.
It is important that these diaries are brought to school daily, as they are checked by teachers and are also used for reading practice in school. For consistent home reading, your child will be rewarded with a token for our reading book vending machine, where they can choose a new book to keep.
In addition to individual awards, we also have weekly class reading awards. Every Friday, the percentage of children in each Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 class who have read at least three times is calculated, and the winning class is announced in our weekly assembly.
This week's reading scores:
Julia Donaldson Class - 29%
Michael Rosen Class - 38%
Nelson Mandela Class - 52%
Boudicca Class - 34%
Rosa Parks Class - 30%
Lewis Hamilton Class - 38%
Kadeena Cox class - 29%
Congratulations to Michael Rosen Class (Year 2) and Nelson Mandela Class (Year 3) , who are the reading winners this week and have been rewarded with extra playtime.
Hello everyone!
This week in school, we had lots of fun learning some command signs using Makaton. Makaton is a special language program that uses signs and symbols alongside talking to help everyone communicate!
Command signs are really useful because they tell us to do something. Have a look at the signs we learnt below!
Using Makaton signs helps everyone, especially friends who find it harder to talk, to understand and share what they want to say. When we sign and speak at the same time, we're helping our whole school be a great place to communicate!
Ask your child to show you the signs they learnt this week. Practice using them together at home. The more you use Makaton, the easier it becomes!
We have also been learning Feliz Navidad, combining our Spanish learning with Makaton! The video is attached for children to practice at home.
Happy signing!
☃️🎁 Year 5 singing at Rochester Cathedral 🎅🎄
Year 5 had a brilliant time at Rochester Cathedral on Tuesday 2nd December! The children sang a variety of Christmas carols beautifully. Some of the children (Freya, Olivia, Charlie and Jaynee) sang a solo for the first verse of 'Once in Royal David's City' and Felicia and Edward confidently delivered a reading. The children were brilliantly behaved and the whole event put us all in the Christmas spirit!
Safeguarding reminders for Leigh Academy Peninsula East
At Leigh Academy Peninsula East, our pupils’ safety and wellbeing at school, at home and online is our priority. We uphold high standards of safeguarding for our students, staff and community.
Leigh Academy Peninsula East fully recognises the responsibility it has under section 175 (Section 157 for Independent Schools and Academies) of the Education Act 2002 to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. In addition Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a statutory responsibility to ‘have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. This is known as the Prevent Duty.
Through their day-to-day contact with pupils and direct work with families, staff have a crucial role to play in noticing indicators of possible abuse or neglect and referring them to the child’s relevant Social Care.
We have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) who is specifically trained and nominated within school. Working alongside the DSL is the ‘Safeguarding Team’.
We follow the Medway Safeguarding Children Board (MSCB) procedures and policies to share concerns regarding children’s welfare with our DSLs, with parents and with relevant external agencies. Part of our legal duty to safeguard our children, may also include us needing to consult specifically with and take advice from, the Police or Children’s Social Care, should the need arise.
By working closely together as a staff and with our partner agencies, we firmly believe that we will continue to offer a safe learning environment for all our children.
Do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any questions about this very serious issue.

Please also find guidance about collecting children from school and the safeguarding of children walking to and from school. Our Year 6 children can walk home on their own providing we have a letter from their parents authorising them to do so. We have a consent form, available from the main office, which also offers some useful advice for parents as to how to assess whether their child is ready to walk to and from school independently.
