FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. In order to receive grants (free money from the federal and/or state government), work study (money you earn through campus employment), or loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), you MUST complete the FAFSA. With this one application, you are applying for all three of these types of aid.
Who should fill out the FAFSA?
All seniors who plan to further their education at a community college, four year institution, or vocational school for the following academic year.
Why should I fill out the FAFSA?
So you can be granted money to help pay for your education! FAFSA is one of the most effective ways to receive financial assistance in paying for college. The application is FREE to submit so you have nothing to lose.
When should I fill out the FAFSA?
The FAFSA opens on October 1, 2021. The longer you wait, the less likely it will be that you receive the full amount that you are eligible to get. Once the federal and state funds are depleted, they are gone for the year. You may use last year’s tax information to complete the FAFSA now, so long as you correct the information once the updated tax return becomes available.
**Remember, the published cost of a college does not represent the true cost. What really matters to the student is the amount the student will pay. Use the "Net Price Calculator" tool on college websites.
If the student is a dependent, the following are needed for both student and parent(s) for the FAFSA Application:
FSA ID to log in (do this first)
Social Security Number (if you are not a US citizen, your Alien Registration Number).
Driver's License (if you have one)
Federal Income Tax Return, W-2s, and other records of money earned ( The IRS Data Retrieval Tool can transfer your tax information into the FAFSA. If the "Link to IRS" button is available, you can click it.
Bank Statements (checking and savings) and records of investments (stocks, bonds, and real estate other than the home you live in).
Information on untaxed income (ex: child support)
List of schools being considered.
Graduating seniors please remember to make sure you have access to your CFNC.org account. You will need to complete your RDS (to receive in-state tuition) by completing your application on CFNC.org. You and one household parent needs to complete the FAFSA. Each of you must register for a FAFSAID. FAFSA opens online on October 1st.
