It has been a pleasure to welcome back our staff, pupils and families for the start of the 2024-25 academic year. A particularly warm welcome is extended to our new pupils and families across the school, including our new cohort of nursery pupils who have settled in so well with Mrs Roberts and her team.
This half term, the pupils will continue to build upon their knowledge, skills and experiences across the full range of curriculum areas with a particular focus on "Cynefin" - which broadly translates as "the place where we feel we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar, and the sights and sounds are reassuringly recognisable". Please see the dates later on in the newsletter as a reference point for what is sure to be another busy and action packed autumn term.
Many thanks for your continued support and cooperation,
Mr Raymond
Attending school on time, every day, is not only important for a child’s learning, but also for their wellbeing, achievement and overall development. Click on the link to find out more information about the campaign: Attend to Achieve
Punctuality is also a legal requirement and pupils must attend on time. Persistent lateness has a detrimental effect on a child’s learning and also disrupts other pupils within the class.
All pupils must arrive by 9am to start the school day promptly - doors are open from 8.50am.
Pupils should remain in school for the full day - early collections will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.
Parents must contact the school office by 9am on the first day of absence to provide full reasons for their child’s absence. This is recorded by the Attendance Clerk on Sims.
Many thanks for your continued support and cooperation with this vital aspect of school life. If you feel you need further support in relation to attendance and punctuality, please contact Mrs Julie Jenkins to discuss how we may be able to help.
Did you know?
A pupil who is late by just 15 minutes every day for a year will have missed two full weeks of school.
If a child’s overall school attendance is 80%, they will have missed one day every week, six days every half-term, 12 days every term, 36 days every year and nearly one full year by the time they leave school!
Mr Hilton has been successful in obtaining a teaching post at Dunvant Primary School, Swansea, and will begin his new role on Monday 4th November 2024.
Mr Hilton has been a huge asset to our school since joining us in September 2021 and has made a tremendous contribution to the life of the school. He has worked extremely hard to build excellent relationships with so many of our children and their families.
From Monday 4th November, Miss Conlon will be teaching Mr Hilton's class. Miss Conlon is a familiar member of staff within the school. Over the coming weeks, she will be spending more time in 2RH, working alongside Mr Hilton and getting to know the children. I’m sure you will join me in wishing Mr Hilton the very best of luck in his next chapter.
As a school community we work on a 'Phase' model. The Phases are organised as follows:
NKR, RER/MR & RHH will be known as 'Early Years'
1RB, 1GP, 1/2NS, 2RH & 2CJ will be known as 'Lower School'
3JM, 3SM, 3/4LC, 4CD, 4HC will be known as 'Middle School'
5MC, 5LA, 5/6LR, 6AW & 6KM will be known as 'Upper School'
Our Little Stars, Sunbeams and Stargazers classes will continue to work alongside the relevant phases.
POLITE REMINDER: Our car park can only be accessed by registered users, therefore non-registered users should not access the car park. This includes dropping off and picking up from school clubs. Non-registered users must still walk on to site. Thank you for your support with this matter.
Parking: We recognise that parking nearby can be a challenge but please show respect and courtesy to residents in our neighbouring streets. Please avoid blocking drive ways and mounting kerbs.
Mrs Roberts and the nursery team have been busy helping our new nursery pupils to settle in. It has been lovely to see them exploring their new classroom, indoors and outdoors, whilst building new friendships. We look forward to watching them grow and develop throughout the year.
Congratulations to Dylan and Macey in year 6, who were recently elected as our new 'Ambassadors' for this academic year. As part of the election process, they had to write and deliver a speech about why they wanted to be an ambassador, explaining what skills they had to help them to fulfil the role. We are really proud of them both and we know they will do a fantastic job at representing the school. Da iawn!
A special mention to the other year 6 pupils who took part in the election process. Staff were very impressed with the thought and effort that had gone into the speeches. They were glad they didn't have to vote!
This year as part of our Harvest celebrations we are collecting donations for our 'Cwtch Cupboard' and Pencoed Food bank. Please see the information below for more details about suitable items. If you would like to donate, please send in your contributions by Friday 11th October. Thank you for your continued support with helping us to offer food where needed. If your family would benefit from using the 'Cwtch Cupboard' or Pencoed Food Bank, please contact Mrs Julie Jenkins.
Year 3 and 4 are invited to attend the 'Monster Ball' in the school hall on:
Thursday 24th October, 4.15 PM - 5.15 PM.
Tickets: £3 including crisps and a drink.
(Pupils will not need any extra spending money)
Pupils are welcome to wear Halloween costumes or party clothes, (we are asking for donations of costumes to share with our families for this event, these will be displayed outside the school).
Please note: Each phase will have the opportunity to attend one of these after school enrichment events throughout the year. The School Council are currently working on planning the other events.
We were delighted by the number of applications for after school clubs this term. It was fantastic to see so many pupils embracing the opportunity to attend a club. The large number of applications means that many clubs are now full. However, if you have any queries about clubs or want your child's name to be added to the reserve list, please email clubs@pencoedprimary.co.uk
Please note that some club groups will swap after October half term.
Due to the INSET day on Monday 4th November - Monday Clubs will not commence until the week after.
A big shout out to staff to say thank you for giving up their own time to help run such a wide variety of clubs!
All year 2 families are invited to join our ‘Stay and Play’ sessions on Tuesdays from 3:25 - 4:15. During the sessions, families will be able to access our outdoor play equipment, play games and ride their bikes and scooters on the yard. Siblings of all ages are very welcome to join. Please note, all children must be supervised by an adult. We look forward to seeing lots of families there!
This month our Upper School classes had the opportunity to have swimming lessons at Pencoed Swimming Pool. The pupils worked on developing their swimming technique as well as learning about important life saving and water safety skills. The swimming teachers commented on the high numbers of pupils achieving the 'Gold' award! What a fantastic start to the term. Please visit the Halo website here to find out more about free swim sessions.
If your answer is yes, then Mrs Jo Jenkins would love to see you at the Cross Country Schools races. There are 6 races a year, anyone is able to join the races and you don't have to come to cross country club. Races are on Saturday mornings in local comprehensive schools. We need at least 3 children in each age group; Y3/4 girls, Y3/4 boys, Y5/6 girls and Y5/6 boys to be able to score in the team results.

Earlier this month, pupils from the LRC classes visited Halo Bridgend and took part in the Insport activity day. They tried various sports such as trampolining, rock climbing and frame running. Everyone had a great time!
Lower School were immersed in their new topic 'Wonderful Wales'. Children took part in Welsh dancing, built castles and designed love spoons. This topic has a focus on developing a sense of belonging or 'Cynefin' in Wales.
Middle School had an Immersion Day to launch their Cynefin topic. 'Cynefin' is the place where we feel we belong, where the people and the landscape around us are.
Throughout the day, pupils had the opportunity to present their own identity using ICT and talk about their feelings and emotions. They played cooperative games with their friends in preparation for an up and coming project on creating their own game.
Upper School have also been exploring the importance of their 'Cynefin' but with a focus on their own identity, looking at how it changes as they grow. The novel for this half term is 'Wonder' which encourages pupils to read with empathy. As part of the immersion day pupils made predictions about the text, created their own 'Wonder' inspired self portrait, thought about the importance of keeping their identity safe online and worked collaboratively to celebrate what was special about each other's identities.
What a fantastic start to our netball year! Both teams won comfortably 6-2 and 6-1 when playing against Dolau Primary School. They also had the opportunity of being mixed up and experiencing new positions.
Miss Abell was so proud of everyone's efforts and she wanted to say a big 'Thank you' to everyone who came down to support
The school rugby squad had two excellent fixtures against our near neighbours Dolau Primary School last Friday afternoon. The rugby on show was of a very high quality and even more pleasingly, the players all displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout an enjoyable afternoon. This coming Friday, the squad welcome Mynydd Cynffig Primary to Pencoed RFC for a further round of fixtures.
Last year one of our pupils Barney had some long-awaited and life changing surgery. He was followed by the BBC cameras and his story is now available on iPlayer on episode 5 of the show Saving Lives in Cardiff:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002337c/saving-lives-in-cardiff-series-1-episode-5
Barney chose to do this to raise awareness and let other children suffering with this extremely rare condition know that they are not alone as he often felt he was.
It is an inspiring watch - As a school community, we are all extremely proud of Barney.
Congratulations to Gus, Frankie and Rowan in year 6 following their selection for Bridgend District Schools Rugby. They played their first game against Cardiff earlier this month and they were presented with their ties after the match. Da iawn!

We were delighted to see so many families over the course of the summer. Our summer school programme was a huge success; we ran a range of different sessions for children across the school. This included welcoming our new Nursery pupils and giving our previous Nursery pupils the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their new Reception classes and outdoor areas. Thank you to all staff involved for giving up their time to make summer school possible.
The pupils have returned to school looking smart in their uniforms. Wearing uniform creates a sense of belonging and helps pupils to feel ready to learn. If you need any extra uniform please help yourselves to the uniform racks. Thank you to those families who have donated unwanted uniform, a great way to reuse and recycle.
Lost property is located on the rail situated near the main entrance. Please ensure that your child's clothing and property is clearly labelled with their name and class. Thank you.
Following the success of our uniform sharing, we are now looking to do the same for Halloween costumes and Christmas jumpers. If you have any suitable items which you would like to donate , please send them in ASAP. Many thanks.

With the cost of living on the rise, we are mindful that more of us may need some support. The school runs a 'Cwtch Cupboard', where food supplies can be shared.
