We have reached the end of another action-packed half term across our school community. It has been a pleasure to see so many fantastic activities and initiatives both inside and outside the classroom including school clubs, trips, residential visits and a wide range of authentic learning experiences.
As always, this is only possible thanks to the incredible hard work of our dedicated staff team and the continued support of our families. Thank you so much for this.
In this month's newsletter, you will find a variety of excellent updates and important events and dates for the diary.
Have a happy and healthy half term break with friends and family.
Mr Raymond
We fully appreciate how challenging it can be during morning drop off and afternoon pick up times with parking limitations around the site. Our traffic management plan does provide information on suitable, safe options to park and walk a short distance to school:
Alternative on street parking is available in the surrounding area - There is a Park & Ride car park at Min-y-Nant and also a free car park just off Penprysg Road (behind Maes Glas Veterinary Group) to avoid parking on the main road. If you are unfamiliar with the area, please make sure that you do not block residential driveways or park where this could cause an obstruction.
The church car park opposite the school is not included in these options due to the following reasons:
The church host a range of vital events including weddings and funerals and the car park must be available for these visitors.
This car park has not been designed to host multiple cars and poses a significant health and safety concern when driving in and out of the area
Please support us and our friends at the church in complying with these rules.
Many thanks for your support.
Regular school attendance ensures that children have the best possible experiences at school and make the best possible progress in their learning. We want to work with families whose children are struggling to attend regularly - please do not hesitate to reach out if you feel you need support.
We have had a very high number of requests for holidays in recent weeks. Please be reminded that all requests for holidays must be completed on the school's holiday request form by parents/carers. The BCBC policy states that a child's attendance % must be 95% or above in order to authorise a holiday request. BCBC can issue fines (fixed penalty notices) for parents whose children have more than 5 days of unauthorised absence, including holidays. The fine is £120 unless paid within 28 days when it will reduce to £60.
Thank you for your continued support in enabling your child to attend school regularly and on time.
It has been wonderful to see the sunshine. However, please remember the dangers associated with over exposure to the sun.
Please ensure that your child has a sunhat and water bottle during sunny weather.
Please apply long lasting (8 hour+ protection) sun cream in the morning to avoid the need for reapplication.
Sun safety station - there is sun cream available at the front of the school if you need to apply it to your child at the start of the day.
Congratulations to Rosie in year 4 for her recent achievements in gymnastics at the Under 9’s South East Wales competition:
4th for floor individual
3rd vault individual
3rd overall individual
1st as a team
Congratulations to Fraser in Reception who took part in a local BMX competition in Maesteg last week. He was fearless and his classmates absolutely loved watching the videos of him riding over ramps at speed!
Ava in year 5 recently went to Drayton Manor as part of the Debra UK members weekend for children with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)! It was the first time for Ava to meet other children with EB and an opportunity to link up with consultants, doctors, specialists to discuss any concerns or ask questions. We are so proud of Ava and delighted that she enjoyed the occassion so much.
Congratulations to Charley in year 5 (and his older brother Karsen) who recently completed the 5k Race for Life in Cardiff. What a fantastic effort for such a brilliant cause!
Congratulations to Sion who competed in the recent West Wales Championships Saturday in the 800m U11 Category. He gained a fantastic 5th place is a category with older athletes running a personal best in tough conditions!
Well done to Clara in year 6, who represented the school as part of the Rotary Club's 'Youth Speaks' competition at Betws Primary recently. Clara chose to talk about the impact of plastic pollution, which she did with passion and enthusiasm. Mr Raymond and the year 6 staff who went along to support her were so proud of her efforts.
The Reception team have been developing their outdoor area with the many resources which have been donated by our school community. A huge thank you to everybody including Mr Vaughan who has been instrumental in the changes that have taken place! We have been very lucky with the recent weather, where the children have really made good use of their new outdoor provision.
Sarah Murphy, Minister for Health and Wellbeing visited our school to chat to children about the impact of the Daily Mile. We have recently received the 'Children Fit for Life' award following the success of the Daily Mile. Mrs Murphy visited Stargazers, who gave a short presentation on how the Daily Mile helps them. Mrs Murphy was very impressed and she hopes to return to our school with Cath Bingham from Welsh Athletics.
Lower School launched their new topic of 'Carnivals around the World' with an immersion day. Children had the opportunity to taste sweet treats that would be eaten in different countries during carnival time, joined in with a samba dance and created their own steel band inspired by reggae music.
Upper School pupils have been learning about the 'Seven New Wonders of the World' over the past few months. As part of their home learning they were challenged to build a 3D model of their favourite 'Wonder' or a landmark they feel should be one of the 'Wonders'. Upper School staff were overwhelmed with the response and very impressed with the standard and variety of models.
To end the topic, Upper School took part in their own Brazilian Carnival parade through the school, where they wore masks they had designed and created. The parade ended in the hall where pupils then took part in a samba dance lesson! A fantastic effort!
Our A and B football teams took part in the 'Apollo Schools Tournament' recently. Team A reached the quarter finals, losing on penalties to Croesty. Team B finished in 4th position in their group, narrowly missing out on a place in the quarter finals. A superb effort by all involved! Da iawn! A shout out to the parents/carers who helped to coordinate transport arrangements.
The rugby team took part in the Apollo Schools 7 a side tournament at Brewery Fields. The team made it to the quarter finals losing out on a golden try to the eventual winners. Fantastic sportsmanship shown and a big thank you to parents/carers for assisting with transport arrangements.
The nursery children have been ‘glamping’ in their outdoor area. They have been cooking food in their tent instead of the home corner and have built a fire from the loose parts materials to toast marshmallows. They also enjoyed dancing around the maypole in the sunshine. What a super time they’ve had!
On Sunday 11th May, our school netball team competed in the Urdd finals tournament, in Aberystwyth.
The girls gave 100% in all games and were superb representing the school. They narrowly missed out in a place in the semi finals but finished in the top 8 teams in Wales! Da iawn pawb!
Miss Abell said it was an excellent end to a fantastic netball season.
A MASSIVE thank you to the families and staff who travelled to support the team! A special mention to the two sibling supporters who cheered on Pencoed all day - well done Daniel in y4 and Maddie in y3.
Thank you to Miss Abell for co-ordinating the event especially on a Sunday!
Learning to swim is an important life skill and we are lucky to have a swimming pool in our local community. Over the last few months our year 4 pupils have benefited from swimming lessons, where they have worked on improving their swimming skills, as well as learning about important life saving messages.

Our table tennis team had a great day out at Swansea Tennis Centre, where they took part in the South West Table Tennis Championships. We came 3rd, 4th and 6th out 21 schools. Oscar in year 5 teamed up with a pupil from another Bridgend school to win the whole event. Mr Hopkins was impressed with the team spirit and sportsmanship. A big thank you to the parents/carers who helped with transportation and support.
Last Tuesday, Stargazers had a brilliant day out in Cardiff as part of their work on famous landmarks. The children travelled on the train, had a fabulous tour of the Principality Stadium before having lunch in the grounds of Cardiff Castle. The children were a credit and represented the school brilliantly. Many thanks to all of the staff involved and a particular thanks to Mrs Jo Jenkins for her organisation of the trip.
The Little Stars team would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously donated gazebos and funds towards our project to create shaded areas in the school yard.
The children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Diwrnod Calan Mai, especially dancing around our colourful Maypoles.
School staff also joined in the fundraising efforts by wearing jeans to work and making donations. Thanks to the combined generosity of our school community, we have raised a fantastic total of £267.30. Da iawn pawb!
Little Stars enjoyed celebrating Calan Mai and dancing around the Maypole.
Our year 6 pupils enjoyed spending the morning at Pencoed Comprehensive last Friday, where they took part in 'Expressive Arts' activities including art, drama and music. Pupils had the opportunity to meet year 6 pupils from other primary schools too. There are two more transition dates before the end of term:
13th June - AM only
3rd July - until approx 2pm
In April, pupils were invited to wear purple to highlight the important role Service children play in the Armed Forces community. Purple was chosen because it symbolizes all branches of the military, a combination of Army Green, Air Force Blue, Coast Guard Blue, Marine Red and Navy Blue.
Mrs E. Bowden - for being kind and caring.
Mrs N. Thomas - for supporting the well-being of pupils.
A huge well done to the staff, pupils and their families who took part in a special event at Bute Park. The 'Ultra Fun Run' allows participants to select 5k, 10k, half marathon, full marathon or ultramarathon to raise funds for this important charity. Bigmoose are a Mental Health charity providing fast and accessible therapy to people who are struggling. They are working tirelessly to help save and change lives every single day.
