As we approach the end of the school year, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, families and the pupils themselves for your continued efforts and commitment to the school. It has been a hugely successful and enjoyable year to date and within this June newsletter, we celebrate lots of the most recent activities and initiatives.
I'd also like to signpost you towards our transition arrangements and a detailed list of dates for the diary including the confirmed Inset days for next year (we have now confirmed 5 of the 6 days). It is an extremely busy time of year and I hope you find this section a useful reference point.
We recognise that transition to new classes / schools can be a very anxious time for children. If you feel your child requires extra support with this, please reach out to us.
Many thanks for your continued support and cooperation.
Mr Raymond
Our school is committed to ensure regular attendance at school is a priority which will in turn provide pupils with the best possible chances in life to succeed and to achieve their goals.
Punctuality is also a legal requirement and pupils must attend on time. Persistent lateness has a detrimental effect on a child’s learning and also disrupts other pupils within the class and throughout the school.
Can parents and carers please ensure that:
All pupils arrive by 9am to start the school day promptly.
Pupils remain in school for the full day - early collections will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.
The school office is contacted on the first day of absence and a reason is provided for your child’s absence. This is recorded by the Attendance Clerk on Sims.
If a pupil arrives after 9am, parents must sign the "late book" and must enter through the main doors of the school. This is monitored on a regular basis and recorded by the Attendance Clerk. Those parents who are consistently late will be contacted by the Attendance Clerk in the first instance and then the school will coordinate with the Educational Welfare Officer to decide on the appropriate action.
All requests for holidays must be completed on the schools holiday request form and completed by parents/carers. A decision on whether to authorise the request is dependent on the following contributory factors:
Time of year.
Length of time.
Overall percentage of attendance.
Reasons for any absence.
Impact on the child’s learning.
Many thanks for your continued support and cooperation with this vital aspect of school life.
Please see key dates and information regarding upcoming transition arrangements.
11th July - parents/carers will be informed about their child's class teacher for September.
Friday 12th (AM) & Monday 15th (PM) July - pupils will spend time in their new classes.
12th July - 'All About My Child' activity to be sent home. (Please return by 15th July).
Please do contact us if you have specific concerns about transition or if you feel your child requires additional support.
Our current year 6 pupils have separate transition to Pencoed Comprehensive on Thursday 4th July
As part of our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle and to help families with the cost of the school day, we are organising an end of term 'Welly Exchange'.
On Wednesday 17th July, all families are asked to bring in any wellies that no longer fit and to exchange them for the next size up. For each pair of wellies donated, families will receive a raffle ticket for a special prize draw!
More information will follow, however, in the meantime please have a hunt for any spare/old pairs of wellies you may have at home. Thank you!
The sun made an appearance for the first of this year's Sports Days featuring our younger learners. It was fantastic to see how well the pupils participated in their events, showing resilience, cooperation and also some competitive spirit! A huge thank you to the many families that came to support the events and to the staff for their efforts with the organisation.
Unfortunately, the Middle and Upper School Sports Day had to be postponed due to the forecast for poor weather conditions, it will now take place on Tuesday 2nd July.
Middle School - 9.30am
Upper School - 11am
Upper School pupils have been learning about electricity, and as part of their investigations they explored whether the length of wire impacted the brightness of the bulb.
Upper School pupils had an absolutely brilliant time at the disco. They didn't stop dancing for the entire duration and thoroughly enjoyed singing along to the playlist they had pre-selected. Staff praised the behaviour and enthusiasm of all the pupils. A big thank you to all the staff who stayed to help run the event!
Middle School pupils have created some impressive paintings inspired by their current topic ‘Wonderful Water’ and their previous science topic ‘ Light and shadows’. The children used paint to colour mix different shades of blue and then researched sea animals to create a silhouette of a sea creature of their choice. We think you'll agree that their finished products are quite effective!
Lower School pupils were the first from our school to visit the beach this month. The children explored rockpools, played lots of fun beach games and found out about the creatures that live on the sea shore. Well done to all of the children - they made us proud and displayed brilliant behaviour all day.
Middle School pupils also had an amazing time at the 'Beach Academy' at Rest Bay. The pupils were involved with a carousel of activities including litter picking, kite making, rock pooling and learning about the impact of plastic pollution on sea life. Staff and pupils were delighted that the sun shone brightly all day long!
Well done to Jack, Mia and Thomas for achieving first place in the Pencoed cluster school library quiz. Following this success they travelled to Bryngarw House for the 2024 Bridgend County book quiz where they competed against 10 schools. Although they didn’t win, their effort, resilience and most importantly sportsmanship was a pleasure to see. Thank you to Mr Hilton for supporting them.
Congratulations to Clara, Dylan and Heidi in year 5 for coming runners up in the Rotary Club debate. The pupils were invited to compete against three other schools at Bridgend Civic Offices. Our team chose to debate about whether children should be allowed to have mobile phones and they put across some convincing points! Well done all! Thank you to Mrs Malone for helping them to prepare for the debate.
Well done to pupils in 3/4LC/BMJ who recently took part in an exciting project where they had to work in groups of 2 or 3 to build the tallest tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti strips. Catherine from 2B enterprising (The Bumbles of Honeywood) was impressed with how the class worked, showing their ability to be creative, cooperative, resilient and determined when applying their problem solving skills.
Congratulations to Esme in year 4 for her outstanding fundraising efforts. She raised over £450 by having her hair 'chopped' for the Little Princess Trust. We are all so proud of her for taking part in such a selfless act of kindness. We also love her new hair style!
Congratulations to Seren in year 4 who recently received a honours cap playing football for Bridgend District representing Pencoed Primary. Good luck for the trials next season too!
Sophia attended a final football trial for Bridgend District Schools U9’s team. She was successful and has been selected for the forthcoming season! Furthermore, she was also named as Tondu United's most improved player this season - Fantastic!
Elis and Aled have been competing in show jumping competitions held at Sunnybank Equestrian Centre. At the finale show in May, Elis and his team came first overall with Elis accumulating the most points as an individual for his height category. Well done boys!
Mr J. Hopkins - for all your hard work!
Mrs A. Brennan - for securing school funding.
