It has been an excellent start to the summer term and it has been a pleasure to see so many parents and carers attending the school for a wide range of family engagement events and activities. A special mention to our oldest year 6 pupils who had a brilliant time on their recent residential visit to Liddington in Wiltshire. They were an absolute credit to the school and to their families throughout the visit.
In this month's newsletter, there is a range of great news and updates from across our school community. Please note the dates for the diary section which includes key events such as sports days and school trips.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Mr Raymond
We continue to make steady progress towards our whole school attendance target of 95%. You will be aware that if your child's attendance figure falls below 90%, we will be in touch to offer our support in improving your child's attendance.
Term Time Holidays
A common query is when a term time holiday request has been returned as "unauthorised". This is nearly always because a child's attendance figure is below 95%. Term time holidays can only be authorised if the attendance 95% unless there are exceptional circumstances e.g. compassionate reasons.
Reporting pupil absence
As part of our attendance policy and processes, it is vital that parents and carers report pupil absence immediately. Please do so using the following options.
How do I report my child's absence?
If your child is unwell you can let the school know using any of the following:
Call the school office - 01656 815730
Email the school office - admin@pencoedps.bridgend.cymru (note - please don't email contact@pencoedprimary.co.uk with attendance related updates)
Text using the School Comms Gateway App
These can also be used to inform us about upcoming medical appointments etc.
How do we communicate and share information with our parents/carers?
Class Dojo - This remains our number one platform for sharing key information with our families. Please remember to check your child's 'Class Story' page for updates specifically related to your child's class, and check 'School Story' for more general updates. Please note: Although staff can send outward messages to parents/carers they are no longer accessing incoming messages, (this does not include the ALN staff, Mrs King, Mrs Ryall-Friend & Mrs Patrick), therefore see the information below about how to share informtion with us.
School Comms - The School Comms Gateway app is also used to help share information about upcoming events which require payment/consent. If you need help to download this app, please contact the office staff who will be happy to assist with this.
Email - Some information is also shared via email from the school's admin address. Please ensure that we have an up to date email address on record for you.

We would like to say thank you and good luck to Miss S. Williams as she leaves us for pastures new. Miss Williams has been part of the PPS family for 13 years and has worked with many pupils throughout this time in her role as Special Needs Support Assistant. Although her role involves one to one work with specific pupils, she has always gone above and beyond and built relationships with all the pupils within the classes she has supported in. Staff also recognise her willingness to lend a hand and her commitment to the school. We wish her all the best with the next step of her career journey.
Congratulations to the following pupils:
Rosie in year 3 for her participation in the Welsh Gymnastics South Central area prelims. Great effort Rosie!
Jack in year 6 who continues to impress us on the running track, he is ranked in the top 10 in the UK for his favoured distance 1500 metres! Jack has been selected to race in the South Wales outdoor track Championships in Aberdare in May, where he will compete in both the 1500 metres and the 800 metres. Good luck Jack!
Ella in year 2 competed in the Iska championships 2024 and won a bronze medal for her team Bridgend warriors. Well done Ella!
Charlie-Ray in year 4 recently represented Cardiff junior devils in Geleen in the Netherlands, Holland. What a brilliant experience and achievement!
In April, Sophia in year 5 competed at Sophia Gardens in her grades for Excel 2. She came 2nd overall - 1st on vault, 2nd on bars, 3rd on floor, 3rd on beam and 3rd on range and conditioning. She will now travel to Stoke on Trent next week and will compete for Wales in the British finals. Absolutely superb!
Many congratulations to siblings Grace and Ethan who recently appeared in BBC's hit comedy series "Mammoth". Great job both!
Year 6 visited Liddington PGL for this year's residential trip. The pupils enjoyed taking part in a range of outdoor activities including raft building, archery and climbing. Staff were delighted with how the pupils conducted themselves and all agreed that it had been a pleasure to take them! A huge thank you to the staff for accompanying the pupils.
Our year 6 pupils visited Pencoed Comprehensive twice last week as part of their transition journey. On Wednesday they were treated to a performance by members of the BBC National Orchestra. A wonderful opportunity! On Friday the pupils took part in a cluster sports festival, where they participated in a range of sporting events. Year 6 will return to the comprehensive in June for an Expressive Arts themed day.
Our Upper School rugby players enjoyed taking part in the cluster touch rugby tournament this month. Despite the rain, the pupils showed enthusiasm and perseverance. Da iawn pawb!
Due to swimming Middle School's immersion day took place over three afternoons and the Learning Resource Base joined them. The children were involved in activities relating to 'Our Wonderful World' and completed tasks involving; research on a country of choice, designing a sea creature sculpture and discussing what positive influence they could make to our world.
Our cluster programme was a huge success again this year; 'Reading Rockets' took place over the Easter holidays, with pupils from Croesty, Coety and Coychurch primary schools. The pupils worked on developing their reading skills whilst experiencing a range of activities. These included a session with Griff the therapy dog, a visit to Pencoed library and a keep fit session with the AYPD team (BCBC).
This month, we celebrated the end of another successful ‘Funky Phonics’ programme. A fantastic 97% of our reception families took part in the 6 week programme and made a positive impact on their child’s learning.
A reminder of our DIY SOS morning on Saturday 18th May from 9am-12pm.
During the morning, we will be giving the site a big tidy up after the long and hard winter and spring period. This will include pressure washing, gardening, tidying up the forest area and painting.
A huge thank you to the responses we have had so far. If anybody else is available and can spare an hour or two, please email contact@pencoedprimary.co.uk.
We have had an excellent, initial response regarding our plans to host a careers and world of work day - This date has now been finalised for Friday 5th July 2024.
During the day, we are planning to host an event where pupils from across the school are given the opportunity to talk to people from a range of career backgrounds and professions.
We are aware that many parents, other family members, community businesses and friends of our school have unique skills and careers that our pupils could benefit from learning more about. We are trying to find out more about what talents, expertise and jobs we have around us, and whether we could utilise these skills as part of our links with our families and community. Whether you know an archaeologist or electrician, dentist or shopkeeper, we are interested in hearing from as many career backgrounds as possible.
If you, or somebody you know could help us and talk to our children about their career and world of work, please email contact@pencoedprimary.co.uk with the following information:
- Name
- Job
- Further Information
- Availability on Friday 5th July.
We will be collecting further responses until Friday 3rd May and will continue to share further information about this exciting event as the summer term progresses.
Many thanks for your continued support.
As April is the Month of the Military Child, last Friday we celebrated all the service children in our community. We created some fantastic dandelion artwork and wore purple proudly! Thank you Mrs King, for helping us celebrate such an important day. 💜
Congratulations to staff who took part in the Big Moose Ultra fun run in Bute Park. Staff raised money for this important charity, whom we are partnered with. Mr Snowdon and Mrs Jo Jenkins ran a half marathon, Mrs Maund ran 10k, and Mrs King, Mrs Brennan and Mrs Julie Jenkins walked 5k. A super team effort!
