Reading and Writing
Our school has adopted the Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study. These units encourage kids to be readers and writers. We all want the students to fall in love with reading and writing. The lessons in all units were created by the Teacher's College at Columbia University.
Our school is using the Everyday Math Program, designed by The University of Chicago. This program focuses each unit on a different mathematics concept and then incorporates other essential skills that our students need to be successful in the real world.
In grades 3-5 the students science lessons have been created using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Science Fusion books, Discovery Education online resources and SAU 48 provided curriculum. This year we are going to be learning about energy, life cycles of organisms and geology.
This year our Social Studies focus is learning all about Waterville Valley. The students will learn how the town was established, how the local government is run, how to be a valued citizen, local heros, and map skills.
In our classroom, I will be working with the students on different behavior management skills using the Responsive Classroom model. The students voices will be heard when it comes to making classroom rules, playing games and making choices.
