Elizabeth Souretis has had an impressive high school career- from running in All States to breaking school records. An injury put a damper on her senior season but her tenacity shone through.
The Titan Times sat down with the Cross Country captain to ask her a few questions about her season and recovery process, as well as her plans for college.
Q: What is your favorite cross country memory?
A: “Probably all of the pasta parties. All of the girls on the team are like one big family because you go through all of these things together. I’m going to miss everyone next year.”
Q: Are you planning on running in college?
“I am. I’m not sure where though but I’m really excited to continue my career and to be able to have the opportunity to do so. I think that everything worked out for the best.”
Q: How long were you injured?
A: “I was injured for around eight weeks and I had a stress fracture on my femur, which was really painful. I also wasn’t able to run for three months.”
Q: What did the recovery process entail?
A:"I did a lot of physical therapy and I had to patient even though I really wanted to run again. I put as much energy into getting better as I did when I was actually running."

A: "In cross country, I run the 5k. In track, I run the mile, 800, and 200.”
Q: What are some of your best records?
A: “Some of my best records are 4:37 for the mile, 16:11 for the 5k, and 10:07 for the 2 mile.”
Q: What do you think is your key to success?
A: “I put in a lot of work and I am hard working, disciplined, and I never skip practice."
Q: How do you train during the offseason?
A: "I run with my teammates and we do workouts and some lifts."
Q: What are your goals for next season?
A: "Next season, I want to place really high for cross country in the state meets and in track, I want to help our team this year win a state championship."

What to Expect from This Year’s Winter Sports Lineup
by Jack Eva
As the fall sports season comes to a close with a Thanksgiving football win, it’s time to look ahead to the upcoming winter season. Winter competitions featured at Pembroke High School include track and field, swimming, basketball, hockey, winter cheer, wrestling, and gymnastics. With a multitude of different sports options, there are many ways for students to get involved in after school events.
A historically awarded program, the track and field team is looking to continue to make history this winter season. Senior leader Ian Gillan remarked, “Legs feed the wolves. We’re coming for it all this year.” High hopes for Pembroke’s most successful program.
The Pembroke swim team also looks to make waves this upcoming season. Senior captain, Ryan Milchunes, told the Times, “We have seen a lot of swimmers make a ton of progress and are so excited to compete this year! Lots of new and old faces are a part of our team, including 6 seniors. We cannot wait to see how much we can grow and achieve. Go Pemswim!!” The team is coming off of an impressive last season and this year looks just as bright.
After both boys and girls basketball qualified for the MIAA Tournament last year, expectations are sky high for both programs this upcoming season. Boys varsity captain, Jacob Derochea, has been putting in the work over the offseason and believes that the team can make a run. “As a team we believe we can reach 14-6, but we are working to reach higher than that.” With many returning players and two new freshmen, the girls team has similar aspirations and is anticipating a deep run. Girls Varsity captain, Jordyn Fay expressed “I’m looking forward to playing with the same people again and playing a new style of basketball.” These Titans are ready to make it rain.
Following a second round exit for the girls hockey and an elite eight loss for boys hockey, both teams will be on a revenge tour this season. Boys varsity captain, Jake Sheehan, said, “We lost a lot of great seniors last year and a great goalie, but we have a talented group and upcoming younger players. Gonna be the team nobody wants to play.” A lot of confidence coming from the boys' side this year. Junior captain, Hannah D’Angelo, commented, “I'm optimistic about this season. We've got a strong lineup and everyone has been working hard. If we stay focused and play to our strengths, I think we have a great chance of doing well.” Both squads are primed and ready to make their mark this year.
Going back to last year, the winter cheer team could not compete due to a lack of numbers. However, they are looking for a strong rebound this year. Senior captain, Hailey Burrill, quoted, “I think we can be really good this year. There’s a lot of good talent.” With competition season just around the corner, winter cheerleading is trying to make a statement.
Reflecting on last season, the wrestling team had an underwhelming performance. They lost six seniors, one being all-star Nate Rosas. This year, the team looks to be filled with young talent and loaded with opportunity. Senior captain, Decklan McDevitt, noted, “We have potential this year, a lot more people are going to focus on Pembroke Wrestling.” High expectations for the team this year, let’s hope they can pin them.
Finally, the Pembroke gymnastics team had a remarkable 2023-2024 performance, winning the Patriot League title. Senior captain, Alex Raleigh, said, “After last year's league championship I believe that the gymnastics team will be able to keep its success with the addition of three new juniors.” With a mix of new talent and established veterans, the gymnastics squad has a strong chance to remain dominant in the Patriot League.
Lots of exciting times ahead for Pembroke High School winter sports. Be sure to support your classmates as the embark on an exciting season. Good luck Titans!

Buffalo Snow Globe Game
by Donovan D’Attanasio
On the first day of December Last week's Sunday night football team featured the Buffalo Bills hosting the San Francisco 49’ers. The Bills dominated the 49’ers in this snow globe of a game, winning convincingly by a score of 35 to 10.
Buffalo’s offense was highly effective both passing and rushing, with quarterback Josh Allen throwing for two touchdowns and also rushing for one. The rushing touchdown from Allen was set up by an Amari Cooper reception to a pitch right to the star quarterback. Both running backs James Cook and Ray Davis shared carries, each having touchdowns rushing for 170 yards combined. The defense also deserves some credit limiting quarterback Brock Purdy to only 11 completions for 94 passing yards. Defensive end Greg Rousseau had the only sack of the game on Purdy to lead to a 49’ers punt.
This win from the Buffalo Bills over the 49’ers pushed their record to a strong 10-2. The bills clinched the division with this win making them the best team in the AFC East. They are almost first in the American Football Conference just behind a strong 11-1 chiefs team led by Patrick Mahomes and company.
Josh Allen has a very good chance of winning this year's MVP as he is clearly leading this Buffalo team to great things. Sophomore Mikey Cantino said, “It was Lamar Jackson but Josh Allen is playing better these past few weeks”. If he wants to win it this year he has to keep having a great season because Saquan Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles running back is having a standout season. Barkley has 1,499 scrimmage yards this season with 11 combined touchdowns on the ground and in the air. Junior Jack Avedission said, “I think Saquan will win the MVP because he is about to break the single season rushing record”.
This weekend's snow game showed that not only Josh Allen can play in good conditions but can also do the same in flurry weather. Do you think he will win the MVP?
NBA Cup Continues
by Colin Gresham
The NBA In Season Tournament was first introduced last year in the 2023-24 season. The In Season Tournament allows teams that are contending for the Finals a chance to compete for a championship in another way. It also allows fans to stay engaged and drives additional interest and revenue towards the league.
The Eastern and Western Conferences are split into three different groups, Group A, B, and C. The groups are based on the team's win-loss record from the 2023 season. Each group has 5 teams, and each team plays four group play games followed by single elimination knockout rounds. Only eight teams advance to the knockout rounds. The knockout rounds consist of quarter finals, semi finals, and the championship.
Every tournament game counts towards the teams record except the final. Each team plays every team in their group once. The group play games occur on Tuesdays and Fridays from November 12th to December 3rd. Two quarter final games will be played on December 10th and 11th. The two semifinal games will be played on December 14th. The championship for the tournament is December 17th.
The Knicks, Bucks, Hawks, and Magic clinched spots in the knockout round for the Eastern groups. The Thunder, Warriors, Rockets, and the Mavericks clinched spots for the Western groups. The knockout games will take place on December 11th and 12th. The winning teams will advance to the Semi finals on the 14th.
