FACS of Life is a brief overview of the many Family Consumer Science classes offered at Pella High School. This course includes an introduction to decision making, problem-solving, communication, relationships, family life, budgeting, on-line banking, beginning personal finance principles, basic food preparation and nutrition, kitchen safety and sanitation principles as well as an introduction into child development and housing design principles.

The students will demonstrate kitchen safety and sanitation requirements for basic food preparation. Through the use of a peer, students will integrate recipe reading skills, proper measurement skills, preparation skills, and solutions for meal preparation clean up. Students will also demonstrate food storage principles, portion control skills, nutrition requirements using myPlate in food presentations and beginning cooking techniques.

85530 INTRO TO SEWING AND TEXTILES

Intro to Sewing and Textiles is a beginner-friendly, semester-long course that introduces students to essential sewing and mending skills. This class emphasizes practical, hands-on learning in both hand sewing and machine sewing, giving students the foundational skills to care for and repair their own garments. Students will explore techniques to fix garments, learn effective hand stitching methods, care for different fabrics, and operate a sewing machine confidently. Projects could include creating basic items such as a pin cushion, pillowcase, and PJ pants, all while building an understanding of textiles and fabric care.
