📖Reading news 📚
Reading Passports
We were so pleased to see so many of you visit our library over the summer. It has been great to see some of you bringing in your reading passports already, please send your child/ren in with any completed passports to give to Miss Skipp. We want to make sure everyone gets their certificate and badge!
Year 4 Author Visit
I am really excited to be able to begin to offer author visits to year groups again this year. The engagement with these was amazing last year so we would love to keep up the momentum. The first author, Jack Jackman, will be coming in to visit Year 4 on October 14th. He is the author of Maisie VS Antarctica, this is the book Year 4 are reading in Guided Reading lessons this term. As before the chance to order books will be available to children and this will be uploaded to School Grid.
We are very lucky that he will be coming in to speak about his new book; Maisie VS The Himalayas:
Filled with humour, heart and a touch of the supernatural, this second book in a brilliant new series takes you on a non-stop adventure in The Himalayas, perfect for the most intrepid of readers! An action-packed cross between Adventures on Trains and My Brother is a Superhero. When Maisie travels with her Dad to the Himalayas to research his book, How to Find Buried Treasure, she doesn't expect their exploration to take them deep into the caves beneath the mountains. Before long, Maisie has discovered a cursed treasure, stolen a shark, been hunted as a thief, walked through an underground lake and outrun an explosion.
Reminders
Arbor
Arbor is our communication app where you can receive and reply to messages from school. You can also use Arbor to book your child into Breakfast Club and clubs give consent and pay for clubs and trips. If you have not yet signed up logged in to Arbor please talk to the office as a matter of urgency as without it, we may not be able to send you important messages and reports on your child.
School Grid
School meals should now be ordered through School Grid. Please be aware that the school office no longer has the ability to order meals for you if you forget. Parents/carers MUST order the child's meal themselves through School Grid. To help the kitchen to order the correct quantity of food we request that all orders are placed by 10pm of the preceding Thursday.
If you forget to order a meal and are unable to bring a packed lunch to school, your child will be offered a jacket potato or sandwich for lunch that day and School Grid will charge you for this. You can cancel an order up to 8:55am on each day so if you change or mind or your child is absent from school you will need to cancel any pre-ordered meals to avoid being charged. if you are having any difficulty setting yourself up on School Grid please talk to our team in the office who will be able to help.
We recommend that every parent gets set up, even if your child usually has a packed lunch so that you can order occasional meals such as Christmas Dinner.
Walking home alone?
Children in Year 5 and 6 may be given permission by parents/carers to walk to and from school alone. Please ensure that you have informed us of this via google form.
Class News
Find out what we have been up to on our class pages and on Face Book.
Home Learning
Every Monday children are set home learning tasks. The amount of home learning set will depend on the age and stage of the child, but in general it is reading, maths and spellings and is set by the teachers to support the learning happening in class. We do expect all children to try to complete their home learning each week. If your child is unable to compete this one week, please let the class teacher know. Children can complete home learning in the library at lunchtimes if they prefer.
Some home learning tasks are online through apps that we pay for that are brilliant at supporting children's learning such as Doodle Maths and Times Table Rock Stars. We expect children to read 5 times a week and we also ask that children learn sounds and/or spellings depending on their age. Children will have a home learning book in which to complete any written activities.
You will find some helpful pages have been stuck into home learning books this year which can help you at home such as key spellings for the year and your child's reading book level.
Home learning will be sent as a link in the newsletter, but it is also available directly through our website: https://www.psjprimary.co.uk/our-learning/home-learning/
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's home learning please talk to the class teacher in the first instance.
We are aiming for all children to be in school on time every day all year. But we know and understand that sometimes it is unavoidable for children to be absent such as illness and appointments. Where possible, please request appointments that fall outside of school hours. If you are reporting an absence, you should call the school office, or you can use Arbor.
Please be aware that if a child does not arrive at school, we have not had a message and we cannot get hold of you, we may need to contact children's social care or the police as unexplained absence is a safeguarding concern.
SEND Updates
This year, we will be inviting parents/carers of children with SEND to meetings with class teachers three times per year, in addition to our regular parents evenings. The first of these meetings will be over the weeks commencing 22nd and 29th September. Class teachers will contact you next week to arrange a suitable time slot. The purpose of the meeting will be to share your child's new SEND support plan. We have made a few changes to the format of the plans this year, to ensure that all the key information about their needs and support is included.
