A Guide To The Reading Lab
In the Reading Lab your child will participate in dynamic targeted reading instruction tailored to their individual needs. We will be using the Orton Gillingham Methodology. It is an approach that has been utilized for over 50 years and is based on research. Through Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham research, it has been concluded that children who experience difficulties in reading and spelling require a solid phonics approach that is multi sensory, systematic, structured, sequential, cumulative and success oriented. In the Reading Lab, I will be conducting ongoing assessments to monitor your child’s progress and the skills that they have mastered, with the goal in mind to acquire and store these phonics concepts in their long term memory. It is vital that we make connections for children to understand the significance of what and why they are learning a specific skill.
The spelling of English words is either phonetic (which can be sounded out) or irregular words that are unexpected and must be taught through a multi sensory technique. The children will be introduced to new concepts and they will apply them in words, sentences, and stories. We will review previously taught and introduce new concepts, discover, apply, and assess these concepts for mastery. We will constantly be reviewing and practicing to apply these new phonics skills in their reading and writing each time we meet. This website is meant to serve as a tool to help you understand the different components of reading that your child will be learning.
