HONORS AND AWARDS

2023 - Pamela Slaughter is honored to have been featured in the Oregon Historical Society's exhibition video,  OHS Birds of The Pacific Coast Exhibition Video!

2022 - THE FIRST ANNUAL JOEY POPE AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE PARKS LEADERSHIP WON BY PAMELA SLAUGHTER, FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PEOPLE OF COLOR OUTDOORS!

People of Color Outdoors and Pamela Slaughter were both nominated for the award, which included a prize of $10,000 and a year of technical assistance! Pamela Slaughter was deeply honored to have won the award.

Over the years, Pamela and her advisors have evolved POCO from simple meet-ups for people of color to a growing program of environmental and cultural education. Since inception, POCO has hosted over 300 outings including hiking, birding, canoeing, snowshoeing, biking and camping and more. As POCO continues to grow, Pamela has added a nature education program for children grades K-5th called the People of Color Guardians. The POCO Guardians program is open during Winter, Spring and Summer breaks.

"POCO is family friendly, not just for adults. So we're teaching these littles from a young age, to teens about nature, enjoying nature, the importance of preserving nature, about protecting animals."

-POCO Parent

"There's a peace that comes from, spending time in the environment, and there's a peace that comes from spending time with like minded folks. Spending time with people who might be going through the same issues."

-POCO Parent

Tesimonials

“POCO has provided me a place of belonging. I WANT to learn more about the outdoors, I WANT to be with others like me-and not quite like me. POCO has fostered a sense of safety and confidence in being different and adventurous.”

Quote from A'Jay Scipio, POCO member.
