Past Events:

Opening Reception:

Join us for the opening reception for the exhibition Weaving Data, curated by Theo Downes-Le Guin and Nancy Downes-Le Guin. This exhibition explores the intersection of weaving, technology, gender, race, and class norms and features nine national and international artists.

New media and textile artist Ahree Lee will share her most recent body of work, which explores the interconnections between weaving and computing and the often-overlooked but essential role of women in the development of coding. Additionally, she will lead participants in a weaving activity to experience the interconnections between fiber-related arts and computing through hands-on making.

Atlantica: Speculative Fiction and Black Opulence | April Bey

Thursday, March 9, 5:00-6:00 pm

Having developed Atlantica over the course of years as a critical endeavor into Afrofuturist texts and speculative fiction, Bey’s new body of work continues to broaden her unique vision for an ecosystem of mutual aid and acts of reparation. The artist’s expansive world-building—as an intentional decolonial practice—champions Black subjects as the sole representations of opulence, self-care and pleasure, telegraphed through the harmonization of diverse mediums and materials, including sequins, eco fur, and wax fabric.

Anti-Authoritarianism in Art and Design: Vo Vo and Andrew Santa Lucia

Thursday, April 13, 5:00 - 6:30 pm

Please join us for a dynamic conversation between Vo Vo and Professor Andrew Santa Lucia (School of Architecture at PSU) about the relationship between anti-authoritarianism, anti-fascism, anarchism, art and design. This event will take place in the galleries of JSMA near Vo Vo’s multimedia installation Still Fighting: Textile Workers of Lawrence, Strike of 1912 to present (2022), which was created for the exhibition Weaving Data that is currently on view. We invite you to engage more closely with Vo’s artwork and the overall exhibition through this interdisciplinary dialogue. Brandon Truett, Luce Foundation Curator of Academic Programs at the JSMA at PSU, will moderate the discussion.

Shelley Socolofsky Gallery Talk | Dust to Matter : rettaM ot tsuD

Join Weaving Data featured artist Shelley Socolofsky for a material conversation on slow looking, slow making, and the healing properties of weaving and touch. With an art practice grounded in storytelling, myth remaking, and ritual, Socolofsky’s gallery talk invites a deeper interrogation of the binary system shared between weaving and computing.

TAG WE'RE IT: Voices on Craft, Chemistry & Computing

Thursday, April 20, 5:30 - 7:00 pm

How are craft, chemistry and computing connected? Join us for Tag, We're It as literary scholar Marie Lo, chemist Tami Lasseter Clare and computer scientist Ameeta Agrawal take inspiration from the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art's Weaving Data exhibit and weave together stories of their work. After the talks and Q&A, you'll have a chance to visit the exhibit.

Light snacks and sweet treats will be served.


Portland State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences  Tag, We're It series brings together researchers from different disciplines to share their unique perspectives on a topic.

Paper Weaving Workshop

Thursday, April 27, 5:00 - 6:30 pm

Join us for a paper weaving workshop with Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize recipient Johanna Houska (BFA Art Practice, ‘22). The method introduced will utilize various non-traditional weaving materials and draws on inspiration from 2-D artists to develop intricate woven work through color, shape, and pattern. Participants will learn to develop quick methods for paper-weaving and choose various materials to develop their designs to take home.
