These instructions are for registration ONLY for Spring 2024. If you are planning to complete your internship in Summer 2024 or after, return to the main internship page for instructions.
To register for Spring 2024, you will use the university's "by arrangement" process. You will need to complete and submit the online “eBy-Arrangement Credit Request – for Students and Faculty” form (simply called the By-Arrangement form).
This is an online form that will be initiated by you and then approved by the Internship Course Instructor, the CUPA Dean’s Office, and then processed by the PSU Registrar’s Office. You will then be able to see the course in your DARS report, and you will be invoiced for the course by the University.
You will need to complete the following sections of the form:
SPRING 24 TERM Course Instructor:
Professor Laura Hickman
lhickman@pdx.edu
503-725-5201
1. Subject: Select UPA Urban and Public Affairs
2. Course Type: Select 409 (Practicum) *Do not select “Internship,” it will connect you to a different course.
3. Course Number: Select 409
4. You will be asked to title your Internship. You will have limited characters to use and this will be the official course title that will appear on your DARS report and PSU transcript. You will have 30 characters to capture your title on the form after the word “PRAC: _____________”.
5. You will be asked to select the # of credits (4 credits=80 hours; 5 credits=100 hours; 6 credits=120 hours). You will need to gain approval of your internship site supervisor (who will sponsor your internship at the agency) about the number of service internship hours you will provide. If you want hours beyond the typical 4 credits/80 hours, you must have prior approval from the UPA Internship Advisor as well.
6. The UPA degree requires you to complete your internship for a letter grade. You should select "graded," unless you seek advance permission to complete your internship for a Pass/No Pass grade. If you want to make this request, discuss with your UPA Internship Advisor or CUPA Academic Advisor. (In order to make a decision about grading please note that in addition to your hours of service, the written work for the course includes a Proposal, an Internship Log of your service by date, hours and description, and a Final Paper or Portfolio—all of which are described in more detail below.)
7. Your internship involves Community Based Learning – select “Yes.”
8. You will have a text box to provide a brief description of your internship placement and what you will be doing. It should be approximately several short sentences. It is important that you complete this with a reasonable overview of what your internship will consist of.
You will be able to save the form until it is ready to submit for approval by the Instructor.
